Eco Awareness

Going greendoesn’t have to cost the earth

Purchasing decisions made at the wholesale counter are usually driven by a combination of four factors – what’s been specified, what installers are familiar with, products that are at the right price point and what’s in stock.

H

owever, leading UK cable management manufacturer Marshall-Tufflex is adding a fiſth purchasing consideration that it would like counter staff and electrical contractors to take into

account – the eco credentials of the PVC-U trunking solutions purchased.

Reducing the use of plastic, increased and improved recycling and more

intelligent use of what is, essentially, a natural resource, are issues in the news daily, with the focus on consumers and manufacturers to take action. Marshall- Tufflex believes this conversation applies equally to its sector and has a 10 year vision to see all PVC-U cable management products manufactured using recycled material by 2028. And it is leading by example. On average its PVC-U cable management

systems are manufactured from 80% recycled plastic with some, for example white Mini, Maxi and Conduit lengths, produced from 100% recycled material. It recognises that cable management forms a small part of a new-build or refurbishment project but millions of meters of PVC-U trunking is installed throughout buildings in the UK. If 50% of this was made from recycled plastic the reduction in use of virgin PVC-U would be immense. To coin a phrase, every little helps.

And going just a little greener doesn’t have to cost the earth. Marshall-

Tufflex has been using recycled plastic in its products for more than 20 years but only recently felt the time was right to talk about it. This means that not only is there no change in product price, product quality is incredibly high because Marshall-Tufflex has honed and finely tuned manufacturing with recycled material over two decades. That post-industrial waste from the fenestration industry is stronger and more durable than extrusion grade virgin PVC-U is an added bonus that end-users really benefit from. So, in short, nothing has changed in terms of quality, strength, colour, finish or

passionate about, from dog walking to surfing, fishing to running, all set against gorgeous East Sussex locations including the Seven Sisters Country Park and Hastings Country Park near to where the company is based. “The film perfectly captures the passion and commitment we have for the

environment,” said Marshall-Tufflex Marketing Manager Katie Barnes. “It showcases the beauty of our locality brilliantly, which only serves to reinforce our desire to do all in our power to protect the environment. We’re very proud to be using our staff in the campaign; Hannah, Craig, Dave, Rob, Debbie (and Herbie) really enjoyed being part of this project and helping to tell Marshall- Tufflex’s great environmental story.”

The asterisks Marshall-Tufflex is leading the field in using recycled plastic in its PVC-U products. But the percentage of recycled content in each varies - and for good reason. As mentioned, Mini, Maxi and Conduit lengths are 100% recycled, achievable because due to where they are installed, their colour and finish doesn’t need to be high gloss. Premium solutions, such as all-curved Odyssey, require a high level of gloss which cannot be achieved with 100% recycled content. Look out for the asterisks on manufacturer documents and read the small print to understand what it means.

price for Marshall- Tufflex customers but thousands of tonnes of waste plastic are being diverted from landfill each year.

Famous five To inform the market of its recycling credentials the predominantly family owned Sussex manufacturer has produced a series of press adverts and a short film starring five members of staff. Many wholesalers will be familiar with one or more of them. The theme of the campaign, ‘A Window into Cable Management’, has a dual meaning. The PVC-U trunking products are made from 80% top-grade recycled material, the majority of which comes from window manufacture and fabrication. But the campaign also provides an insight into an environmentally responsible manufacturing process and a philosophy which is at the heart of business. The film features employees (Debbie Ensell, Hannah Hayler, Craig Haskins, Dave Carter, Rob Muggridge) taking part in outdoor activities they are

Conclusion A main benefit to electrical contractors buying cable management with a high recycled content is differentiation; seasoned Marshall-Tufflex installers can inform clients of the additional advantage that its solutions offer. Contractors new to the manufacturer have the opportunity to provide a top quality, easy to install product that also ticks the environmental box.
