Recolight launches Reuse Hub T

he Recolight Reuse Hub is a new digital marketplace for lighting. An online platform to facilitate the donation of new and used lighting products and equipment.

Currently, there are considerable volumes of new and used lighting products that are needlessly recycled when they could be reused. Some are in very good condition before removal and therefore a lot of the value and embedded carbon is lost if they are recycled.

Many manufacturers hold unsold stock: surplus new lighting taking up valuable warehouse space. Recolight wants to make it as easy as possible for companies to hand over surplus and used products to third-parties, who can put them to good use. Helping suppliers to free up valuable warehouse space and allowing surplus stock to have another life.

The Recolight Reuse Hub allows donors of such products to link up with potential recipients: companies that could use the donated products.

A reuse hub for lighting The Reuse Hub is the fi rst of its kind for the donation, reuse, and remanufacture of lighting products. Donors can off er both unused, unsold lighting stock, and used-but-reusable lighting equipment that may be suitable for remanufacturing, including those from CAT A and fi t outs.

Any type of organisation can sign up, including manufacturers, remanufacturers, specifi ers, end users, charities, and more. Even those lighting producers that are not yet members of the Recolight compliance scheme may participate. Companies can register as donors, recipients, or both.

The Reuse Hub is currently free of charge for

both donors and recipients. It includes a template agreement between both parties that clearly limits the liability of donors, to de-risk the process. Francesca Cameron, membership coordinator at Recolight, and project manager of the new platform, said: “Recolight is thrilled to be launching this new platform. This is intended to become a vital way of avoiding waste, reducing unnecessary recycling, stimulating reuse, and responding to the climate emergency.” Recolight CEO Nigel Harvey added: “At Recolight, we recycle, but as we move towards a Circular Economy model, recycling is not always the best solution. We hope that the Reuse Hub will be a real game-changer. It shows our commitment to encourage and facilitate reuse in the lighting industry. We hope it will help avoid unnecessary recycling and ensure retention of more embedded carbon.” www.recolight.co.uk

SATCoL re-launches IT Reuse service SATCoL (the business arm of The Salvation Army), is re-launching its Data Destruction service, now called IT Reuse. SATCoL provides a hub for businesses to donate excess, returned or faulty stock that can be reused, repurposed or recycled. Working together with brand partners, local authorities, schools and so more, SATCoL lessens the environmental impact of disposing of goods by extending the useful life of products. SATCoL’s initiative is a free, police- and government-approved data wiping and reuse solution. The project aims to save companies money and give unwanted IT equipment such as laptops, PCs, phones and tablets a new lease of life. By securely destroying all the data on the devices, SATCoL provides a secure solution to disposing of used IT equipment, with the additional benefi t of repurposing them for resale. Donated equipment is distributed to SATCoL’s 240 retail outlets and sold via a dedicated e-commerce platform. This means donated equipment is made available to those where IT devices are needed, and the funds raised from the resale are given to The Salvation Army. SATCoL uses sophisticated software that will destroy the data from laptops, PCs, phones and tablets and ensures everything is removed to the UK standard. This includes the UK Police standard HMG Infosec Standard 5, which is certifi ed by the National Cyber Security Centre as well as other world standards, including those in the US and Europe. This service is fully funded by SATCoL, which can signifi cantly reduce spending for businesses currently paying for a data destruction service. www.satcol.org

The “game-changing” initiative is expected to reduce waste and increase reuse.
