Interconnection

connectors, or distance to a side wall. To objectively compare the options available, we used an example system requiring a minimum of 20 signal lines of 0.5mm wire, using a jam-nut receptacle. Unfortunately, this requirement excluded the MIL-DTL-55116 option, which offers only a maximum of 6 contacts, so the four remaining options would be:  MIL-DTL-38999 Series III with C35 insert.  MIL-DTL-38999 Series II with 12-35 insert.  Miniature 38999 with 20-contact insert.  ODU-AMC Size 3 with 26-contact insert.

All four options satisfy the requirement, but the space envelope is vastly different, with the smallest 30 per cent smaller than the largest. Furthermore, the ODU-AMC has 26 contacts, but the others only 20 or 22.

High-speed data

Military data connectors have historically used commercial inserts such as USB, Quadrax or RJ45, inside a MIL-STD shell. However, ODU chose the more elegant solution of adapting our own multi-pin connectors to transmit the required protocol - resulting in a much smaller connector with all the ruggedness and perfomance of a military connector. The ODU-AMC High

Speed Data series can combine and transmit all high-speed data transmission protocols, with transfer rates currently up to 14.4 Gbits/s, so as to reliably connect all interfaces, such as weapons, comms systems and vehicle connections.

But there‘s a double bonus,

not only are these connectors inherently smaller, but push-pull locking allows much higher panel density, as finger-space for rotation- locking can be eliminated.

Connector locking selection The four sub-types of the Mil-STD 38999 address specific problems facing the military OEM. But there

are difficulties, in that the exact 38999 sub-type of receptacle and mating-plug must be specified at each connection point in the

vehicle, allowing little design flexibility. We wanted to change that, so the latest ODU-AMC

T Series connector allows for a common bulkhead or receptacle for each shell size, with three plug variants. This allows the exact locking method to be determined, at any future time, by the specific choice of connector plug used by the equipment plugged-in.  Thread-Lock screw locking for applications

that have to deal with extremely strong vibrations.  Push-pull plug reliably locks-in with a ball- lock system.  Break-Away (or Snatch) plug releases the connection with a straight pull, allowing quick and easy disconnection in critical situations. Although a new connector design, it is important to stress that it meets, or exceeds the performance requirements of MIL-STD-38999 and also offers additional advantages, being certified to MIL-STD-1472 and MIL-STD-810, withstanding temperature from -65° to +175° C. Standard 38999 crimps and back-shells can be used with this connector. We believe that this 3-on-1 connector could be a game-changer for in- vehicle equipment.
