AI Technology

by the people exposed to the software’s operation, so it is an essential acceptance criterion for producing the software in the fi rst place. Until now, the answer has been human review of every AI output. That is slow, and it doesn’t scale. We think there’s a different answer.

CIE: What is AdaCore proposing instead? Tony Aiello: Our tools, driven by an AI that follows a well-defi ned workfl ow, can help furnish the required trust. Since its inception, AdaCore has promoted languages and built

tools that support the safety and security of high-integrity software by establishing deterministic trust, meaning evidence that comes from repeatable analysis and verifi cation rather than from probabilistic judgement. Applying those same tools to AI output could substantially lower the barrier to using AI in high-integrity development, while keeping humans fi rmly in control of the decisions that matter.

CIE: How can engineers see this approach in practice? Tony Aiello: We’ve built a demonstration

project that shows how we think AI-powered high-integrity software development could work at speed. It’s called GNAT Foundry: Intersection, and we’ve published it on GitHub so engineers can explore it for themselves. It’s a demonstrator rather than a finished product, and we’re keen to hear how teams respond to it.

CIE: What should teams be doing now, even if they aren’t ready to adopt AI-generated code? Tony Aiello: Start preparing. Look at

where your verification and certification effort goes today, and think about which steps could be supported by AI if you had a trustworthy way to check the results. The organisations that build that foundation now will be in a stronger position as AI becomes more widely used in safety-critical engineering.
