voltage delivers lower losses compared to running lower voltage. Therefore, switching from 12V to 48V automatically reduces losses, signifi cantly improving overall effi ciency.


Are Vicor power solutions particularly suited to 48V architecture?


Yes, they are. We are very comfortable powering the predominant voltages which characterize the electric propulsion system. Automobiles use a range of voltages: 800V, 400V, 48V, 12V. Today we offer a range of products designed for the high-voltage to low- voltage conversion, which have the highest power density in the industry, equal to 695kW per litre. Our converters use “soft switching” techniques which allow reduction of losses very high switching frequencies while ensuring conversion effi ciencies close to ideal systems. The transient response speeds for the DC-DC converters are also remarkable: they reach eight million amperes/second. In general, I believe there are three characteristics that make Vicor modular power systems ideal for automotive OEMs: a) Isolation between high voltage and low voltage is particularly important because it is functional to the safety aspect


b) Bidirectional power flow to meet V2X needs (from the vehicle source to any load) and c) Voltage regulation on the load side where precision regulation is required.


Vicor prides itself on working with customers who are focused on   Powering Innovation podcast episodes. How do you stay focused to provide innovation in products to ensure customers can reciprocate that in the automotive sector? We have worked with a few customers who are really changing the face of


the transportation industry, with one customer developing driverless vehicles for commercial deliveries. The reason they chose to work with Vicor is due to our reliable, high-density power modules in smaller packaging. For example, we built and tested an 800V – 12V DC-DC converter that provides 4kW of power in less than 1.5L of space. Additionally, we are demonstrating a 400V – 800V bidirectional DC-DC converter, with a footprint of less than 3.6L and a weight of less than 8kg. For the 48V zonal architecture we will have an 800-48V DC- DC converter that takes up only 1.0L of enclosure space and can be paired with a


500W 48-12V remote DC-DC to create local point of load required voltage. Innovation is part of Vicor DNA.
