or third-party manufacturers for contract manufacturing services including product quality and eliminating the need to invest in new equipment. Before making an outsourcing decision, it is important for buyers to be aware of what to look for before partnering with a distributor. ■ Location: The location of a distributor should always be considered, there are advantages and disadvantages to using overseas companies. Sometimes overseas companies charge less for assembly services but there can often be a reason for that. Some often do not adhere to the same safety or labour standards as valued in the UK, and some countries tend to lack specialist field expertise.
■ Product: Partner with a manufacturer that can offer a large range of power supplies and a distributor that stocks devices that complement and can be used in conjunction with one another. Ensure the distributor has a close relationship with the manufacturer and can support the project throughout from concept to delivery. At GD Rectifi ers we stock a wide range of power supplies by Sirio, Enerdoor, Meth Kft and Meth Srl. Our range of current and pulse transformers from Sirio include high frequency, low coupling capacity, main frequency, measurement and pulse transformers. Our specialist selection of current and voltage transformers from Telcon are designed for primary current cables, and Telcon’s hall effect current sensors are available in a range of confi gurations covering primary currents up to 3000A, providing galvanic isolation between the primary conductor and the output circuit. Our extensive range of isolating and safety transformers from Meth Srl and Meth Kft offers single phase and three phase transformers specifi cally designed for marine, medical, industrial and renewable energy applications.
■ Price: The best price doesn’t necessarily mean the best option. Poor quality and support can cost the project more in the long run. It’s imperative to fi nd a distributor that can provide high-quality products and excellent service every time. It’s often the

extra details that distributors offer that make their services more appealing, like delving deeper into the specifi cation and offering a part more suitable to your application or suggesting a call-off order to save you money whilst guaranteeing supply. Distributors that go the extra mile and provide comprehensive feedback on BoM or build issues can prove invaluable to the component buying process.
■ Equipment & scope: A long-time consideration that often gets overlooked at the outset is whether the distributor or manufacturer has the equipment and testing suitable for the end application. Another factor to consider is: can the distributor and manufacturer of the product support the project across its lifetime including concept, design, prototyping and production? Does the manufacturer deal with multiple suppliers across different project stages which can impact timings, especially for SMEs?
■ Capacity & fl exibility: Product capacity and manufacturer/distributor support play a very important role; can the project demand be met by the product and manufacturer both now and in the future? Will the manufacturer and distributor offer support when the customer needs help?
■ Standards: Although most manufacturers tend to be ISO9001 certifi ed today, the OEM should ensure certifi cation and the systems are current. Often other certifi cations may be required so discuss these and ensure the manufacturer can support this at the quotation stage.
■ Long-term collaborations: Work with distributors to fully communicate future production plans, either for current product revisions or potential next generation developments to secure a long-range forecast. Once this data is shared, distributors can work with customers to understand their schedule for component parts and power supplies. Flexible purchasing solutions allow customers to avoid supply chain shortages and ensures demand can be adjusted quickly should demand rise rapidly.
