Distribution Princeps to present
Accredited specialist distributor of secure, traceable hard-to-source and obsolete electronic, electrical & e-mechanical (EEE) components for hi-rel (high reliability) applications and advanced industry sectors, Princeps will present a session aimed at engineers and procurement professionals working on electronics design projects, helping address the growing problem of counterfeit parts in the supply chain. Attendees will hear from a veteran industry expert about the specialist tools and techniques that his quality team uses to identify suspect components in the electronics supply chain. The session will cover:
Attack of the Clones: 5 ways to spot – and avoid – counterfeit electronic parts
With electronics powering sensing,
inspection to detect internal physical defects or anomalies which would otherwise not be visible.
● XRF (x-ray fluorescence) spectroscopy: non-destructive elemental analysis of the materials of composition, plating thicknesses and so on.
● Decapsulation: removal of packaging material – by mechanical, chemical or thermal means – to expose the structure of the circuit for internal visual inspection.
Speaker: Ian Walker, operations director, Princeps
Ian has brought leadership to the Quality function at Princeps since the company’s inception in 2006. His passion for continuous improvement drove early adoption of both the AS9120 and AS6081 quality management standards, contributing to the success of a multi- million-pound operation providing reliable, traceable EEE procurement solutions to some of the world’s leading hi-rel companies.

About Princeps
connectivity and intelligence in virtually every category of product, electronic components are big business – resulting in increased prevalence (and sophistication) of counterfeit parts in the supply chain. In this session, Ian Walker, operations director at accredited specialist distributor of traceable electronic, electrical & e-mech components, Princeps, will outline 5 key techniques his expert team use to identify suspect and counterfeit electronic components in the supply chain – including comparison of dimensions and markings, x-ray inspection and decapsulation. Ian will draw on the deep expertise and experience of Princeps’ quality and inspection team, explaining how they recently employed a combination of techniques to positively identify a (very good!) clone part – and remove it from the supply chain. The presentation will focus on a specific real-world example of a counterfeit part that the Princeps team recently intercepted. Each of the tests that the

quality and inspection team ran on the part produced anomalous results – but taken in isolation, none were the ‘smoking gun’ that the team like to have. It was only through reference to Princeps’ extensive library of known-good devices that the team were able to positively determine that the parts were actually clones – albeit very ‘good’ clones, that would probably work for a while and under certain conditions. The inspection methodology utilised included:
● Stage 0 research: a review of all the available documentation for the parts, including a thorough trawl of all PCNs (product change notifications) issued by the manufacturer for the specific part, as well as the entire range.
● External visual inspection: including deciphering what the various codes on the part mean and a thorough examination of its packaging.
● Radiography: non-invasive x-ray
Princeps simplifies the sourcing of safe, traceable hard-to-find and obsolete components for customers in hi-rel sectors, including aerospace & defence, mass transit, medical and other advanced industries.
