CIE 40th Anniversary Editor’s comment
Welcome to this very special supplement, which celebrates 40 years since the launch of Components in Electronics (CIE) magazine. CIE has always been dedicated to providing our readers with the most important news and developments from the world of electronics. We’re passionate about finding new ways to help you stay up-to-date with the most exciting advances in this vibrant and innovative industry. Over the years, we’ve added a cutting-edge website and a comprehensive distributor directory which has been the essential manual for buyers and suppliers for 31 years. In 2018, we launched our prestigious Electronics Industry Awards to recognise and reward excellence across the sector. Electronics Live now becomes the latest evolution of the CIE brand. Launching in Birmingham on 17th January, this one-day trade show is designed to be both time- and cost-effective. It will provide a unique opportunity for purchasing managers, influencers and key decision-makers to meet manufacturers, suppliers and
distributors of electronic components, as well as to source product innovations and track the latest developments. In this supplement, you can find out more about the origins of CIE thanks to
BWW Communications CEO Nick Foot, who was the magazine’s first editor. ecsn chairman Adam Fletcher also recounts the network’s long association with CIE. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nick and Adam not only for their contribution to this issue but also for their ongoing support. I’m also very grateful to former CIE editor Christine Evans-Pughe, who – like Nick and Adam – went digging around her loft for old photos to use in this special edition. Since joining the magazine as editor in 2021, I’ve found the electronics industry
to be one of the friendliest and most supportive industries I’ve worked in. It has truly been a pleasure to work on CIE and to get to know everyone in the industry, and I look forward to seeing what the future brings. Catherine Hackett, Editor

26 Standing on the shoulders of giants
In 2024 Components in Electronics (CIE) celebrates its 40th anniversary and on behalf of the ecsn Leadership Team and its membership chairman Adam Fletcher offers congratulations and sincere thanks to the magazine’s editorial staff present and past and to its publishers on their achievement. In this article Fletcher takes the opportunity to look back at two of the most fundamental challenges faced by both the publishing and electronic components industry in recent decades and concludes by sharing his thoughts about the challenges still to come.
30 Adapting to the evolving requirements of a dynamic industry
The electronics industry has changed dramatically in the last 40 years, particularly when it comes to component distribution. Customers demand much more now from their distributors than simply quoting on a parts list, taking an order and shipping the product, writes Solsta.
