How did you get into footwear? Tell us about your background and your current business? After selling the family business I wanted to take a completely different direction, I have always been interested in shoes and fashion and felt my local area lacked a good/different shoe shop. I wanted a new challenge! We are a small boutique in Southampton selling designer shoes and accessories with an emphasis on beautiful, comfortable & quality brands. We are always researching for something a little different and our moto has always been ‘unique by design’.

Where are your premises located and how many people do you employ? Do you have a high turnover of staff? Tell us about your shop, the local area, your customers and their requirements? We are based in Southampton on Bedford Place a 5 minute walk from the centre of town. We are nicely positioned with other Independent businesses around us, such as hair & beauty salons, a few coffee shops & other clothing & footwear businesses; although we are few in number, it certainly helps with business. We are a team of 2 full time staff and 2 part time staff. Our in-store customers are mostly local to Southampton, but do come

from as far as Bournemouth & Portsmouth. We have a varied customer base and we are pleased to offer something for a range of budgets too. Some of our customers come for flip-flops in the summer months, others just for accessories, and some just at the start of the season for early pickings on new styles. Many drop in throughout the season for a regular shop and catch up! All are welcome.

Do you have an online shop/website and do you use social networking for business? We have an ecommerce website www.scarpini.co.uk and use Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

How are you finding the footwear market currently? It is tough at the moment, and difficult to plan for as it can busy one day and not the next. I think all retail is the same at the moment. There is certainly less impulse buying and more consideration from customers when purchasing more expensive footwear.
