FOOTWEAR FOCUS ROAD TEST
Don’t step on my Cipriata blue suede boots!
By Joan Collett W
hen singer-songwriter Carl Lee Perkins was playing at a dance in December 1955 he heard a guy on the dancefloor (they were all “guys”
in those days) warning his girl (yes, they were all “girls” in those days too), and warning her quite forcefully saying, "Uh-uh, don't step on my suedes!"
Perkins looked down from the stage and noted that the guy was wearing blue suede shoes with a scuff mark on one of them. Perkins reaction was to think, "Good gracious, a pretty little girl like that and all he can think about is his blue suede shoes". But that inspired Perkins spectacularly successful and evergreen song, “Don’t step on my blue suede shoes.”
Well, I side with the guy. I have just been given a
pair of Cipriata blue suede Chelsea-style boots (style name: “Stellira”) to road test and I would be outraged if some foot-tangled guy scuffed them. But, the boots had a close call when I first wore them to the pub and as my boyfriend handed me my drink some oaf bumped his elbow and it was only good fortune that save the boots from being launched with a shower of shandy.
Other than that near-mishap it was great evening. I was wearing a pair of
designer jeans and a loose top and, if I say so myself, looked the bee’s knees. The jeans offset the boots perfectly and attracted some very admiring comments. The boots are very light weight, flat soled and have cushioned inner sole, which is great when you are standing chatting in the pub - and in this age of equality - no gentleman (or guy) offers you a seat!
The boots are made by a company that has been in the trade longer than
“Don't step on my blue suede shoes” has been in the charts: UKD (that used to be Marlows) has been in the business for 90 years. For a firm to survive that long in the highly-competitive shoe trade means they must have been getting something right.
12 • FOOTWEAR TODAY • OCTOBER 2018 Cipriata ankle boot
Their latest styles are a demonstration of what they get right. My “Stellira“ model boots are part of their Cipriata in-house brand. UKD say the selling point of the brand is that it, “marries distinctive Italian-inspired style with impressive price points and margins.” What they claim with the Cipriata brand is to offer both classic footwear styles and exciting new designs with eye-catching finishes and colourways.
There is no doubt that my blue boots are classic: they are a timeless “gusset ankle boot” (although I prefer “Chelsea boot style” as a less technical and anatomical description!). As well as being very stylish, they are hugely comfortable to wear, which is often the deciding factor for any boot purchase, at least it is for me!
You can also buy the Stellira boots in mink and burgundy but for my style, “Don’t step on my mink/burgundy suede shoes” doesn’t have the same ring about it.
