Does your shop sell other items besides footwear, bags, gloves, tights, socks, below the ankle products? Our offer includes miniature raincoats, Clothes and baby items from Marmar and Bob & Blossom.
Do you use an EPOS (retail technology) system in your shop(s)? No we don’t have an EPOS system at the moment – all our sales are logged in a book (without customer details) but we keep a very close eye on what is selling and not and our customers really like the traditional approach.
Any difficulties/problems? The current political situation is not helping customer confidence or Brands situated overseas have occasionally displayed some nervousness over the future how things may affect future trading.
Any tips on stock offers, novel ideas for clearing lines or advice for independent shoe retailers who might be feeling the pinch? Absolutely none- it’s something that I’m always struggling with and getting the balance between having enough to offer customers but not being left with masses of out of date stock is really hard to do, we are certainly getting better on stock control but I don’t think we’ll ever get it perfect.
What is your favourite men’s footwear brand/manufacturer – ditto ladies/children’s brand – and why? Sadly we don’t sell adult sizes apart from Sunsans Saltwater sandals. I personally adore Penelope Chilvers for shoes and boots, they are marvelous to wear and I’m always being asked where they are from. I always buy my husband Loakes. He is so fussy and has problems with his feet and ankles from old sport injuries so it’s very important for them to wear the right shoes.
How do you select your products – which criteria do you use / what are your customers looking for? It depends on the age group or developmental stage. We constantly talk about customer feedback and whether we are meeting their desires/wants. Obviously the time of year dictates what we need to order but price levels are very important and we need to offer good value for money.
Which footwear/fashion shows do you attend, how do you rate them? MODA, INDX and I used to go to Bubble.
Do you have a favourite footwear agent you can tell us about? I enjoy working with all my Brands agents, each one has their own particular outlook and we don’t always agree but it’s so important to build a strong working relationship with an open dialog and help one another.
Have you always had a passion for footwear? How many pairs of shoes do you own? Do you have a favourite pair? I adore shoes and always have from an early age. I can’t reveal how many pairs of shoes I own but I am ruthless with them and always make sure they are cared for and put away. My oldest pair is 57 years old and was my first pair.
Any famous customers? Yes we have quite a few very famous customers who are wonderful. It’s been a little shocking at times when we realise who we just been serving. We can’t name anyone as part of our business is to be discreet
And, the next step? Any plans for the future, new lines, retail systems/new technology, etc.? It’s very important to always look to the future. Fashion, trends, technology, customer expectations and global concerns all affect the footwear industry
