EVENT PREVIEW PHOTONEX SCOTLAND

INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKERS AT PHOTONEX SCOTLAND

Xmark Media has chosen a new venue for its annual Scotland event. Photonex, the event where light technologies come alive, will take place in the centrally located South Hall at the University of Edinburgh on Thursday 14 June 2018

P

hotonex is a high-level networking and educational event for Scotland and the North of England. Bringing together the UK’s top photonics technology supplier companies, leading researchers and invited speakers for a very special one-day event. Appealing to anyone working with photonics and light technologies, the exhibition provides scientists the opportunity to get up-close and personal to the very latest equipment on the market. Photonics is an enabling technology and exhibitors can develop solutions to suit your applications.

THE EXHIBITION Companies demonstrating their latest solutions include Andor, Hamamatsu, Princeton Instruments and Thorlabs to name just a few. Such a showcase provides an unbeatable backdrop for the co-located morning conference, ‘Advances in photonic techniques for biomedical sciences’. Leading speakers from across the UK will explore recent developments and uses of photonics in the life sciences as well as future clinical applications. Discussing such applications will be Dr

Mike Tanner (Heriot-Watt University), who will discuss ‘Clinical applications of single photon detection including locating medical devices deep within tissue’ and Dr Marcel Schubert (University of St. Andrews) on ‘Ultra-lightweight and super-sensitive: Novel biomedical applications of flexible membrane lasers and bio-integrated microlasers’. Don’t miss keynote speaker, Prof Paula

Borri (University of Cardiff), who in 2004 began a new area of research in biophotonics at the interface between life and physical sciences. As part of the sensational education programme, Borri’s

Photonex Scotland will include an exhibition of over 25 companies dedicated to optical components, devices, instruments, imaging, lasers, microscopy, optoelectronics, sensing technologies,

spectroscopy, tools and techniques and more

presentation is entitled ‘Imaging and tracking single plasmonic nanoparticles in 3D background-free with four-wave mixing interferometry’ – it is certainly a talk not to be missed. New for 2018, the afternoon meeting

‘Quantum Imaging - breaking new ground’, organised by Technology Scotland and QuantIC, will examine the very latest industry developments being carried out in Scotland and identify new opportunities. Participating will be companies working with and applying this technology to develop new instruments including, Horiba Scientific, Pxyl, UniKLasers and Fraunhofer CAP. Commenting on last month’s event in London, managing director of Logan Research, Ron Logan-Sinclair said: “It was really interesting to canvas new ideas at the conference. I am big fan of the intimate environment Photonex events have – it was a very inspirational visit.”

CONFERENCE DETAILS These two meetings at the event are free to attend. The first is entitled: ‘Advances in photonic techniques for biomedical sciences’. This meeting will explore recent developments and uses of photonics in the life sciences including future clinical applications. This is the ninth conference which changes venue from year to year.

The conference programme comprises presentations by invited speakers from academia and selected professional updates from industry, there will be a poster session of contributed papers from early career scientists who are researching novel and exciting new techniques or unique applications. The second meeting is entitled:

‘Quantum Imaging - breaking new ground’. Industry thrives on innovation as it can bring new ideas to existing products or processes, to improve performance or reduce cost. Quantum mechanics has demonstrated that light has inherent ‘uncertainties’ in its features and quantum imaging can both improve the performance of existing imaging systems and create new sensing modalities beyond what is possible in classical optics. This meeting takes a look at the

research going on in Scotland and identifies new opportunities for industry. Participating will be research groups and companies working with this technology to develop new instruments and applying the technology.

FREE TO ATTEND Speaking ahead of the Scotland event, organiser Laurence Devereux, says: “Photonics in this region is thriving, and research shows no sign of slowing down. Worth an estimated £740m a year in Scotland alone means there are countless opportunities for anyone attending Photonex to be inspired and learn what photonics can do for you.” Both the exhibition and conference are free to attend, however advance registration is requested. For those travelling from further afield, the venue also offers free parking, making it a convenient location for everyone.
