ARTING has now further expanded the capability of its recently
launched range of MICA compact open- source industrial edge computer devices with new Industrial Ethernet variants, allowing direct integration into existing production networks.
INDUSTRY 4.0 IMPLEMENTATION Most industrial companies have established and complex automation solutions with real-time networks such as EtherCAT, Profinet or Ethernet/IP. With the expanding roll-out of Industry 4.0 implementation it is becoming necessary to capture more and more relevant data from these systems and pass the data on to the business level, e.g. an ERP or a Cloud. Both for reasons of cost, as well as
maintaining the reliability of the automation network, in virtually all cases it is not possible to build this into the real-time network via additional PLCs. MICA offers a cost effective and minimally invasive option to collect data on the fly, as well as to extract business- critical data. MICA is connected to an existing
network as a client via standard bus systems and cables (for example, D- coded M12 for EtherCAT). New variants of MICA are equipped with in-built EtherCAT, Profinet and Ethernet/IP function boards. Incorporated software allows these MICAs to be integrated with standard PLC programming environments, e.g. Beckhoff TwinCAT. On the MICA side, the data is available
in a container and can be processed with all the tools present on the MICA. For example, the data could be picked up from the EtherCAT container using JSON

MICA from HARTING enables you to temporarily save, evaluate and process data within the immediate vicinity of machinery or equipment
and then sent via MQTT or OPC-UA to a Microsoft Azure or SAP Hana Cloud. Alternatively, it is possible to store data in a MySQL database container on the MICA and then process it with the in- built ‘R’ programming language for statistical computing on the MICA itself – both MySQL and ‘R’ for MICA are available free from HARTING. There is even the possibility of programming the workflow on the MICA graphically, e.g. using Node-RED.
OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE Using Node-RED, IBM developed an open source software tool suitable for the design and integration of modern IoT architectures. With Node-RED functionalities integrated into the MICA,
it enables the simple visual ‘wiring’ of communication networks and the integration processes of sensors and controls to back-end systems and the Cloud. The option to pre-process data on the MICA is particularly essential: even simple manufacturing facilities can generate multiple gigabytes of data in the course of a day. Relaying this directly to the ERP overwhelms both the network as well as the ERP. With the MICA, this data stream can be buffered directly on the machine and be reduced to business- critical data using proven tools from the IT world. This cuts costs and radically simplifies the Industry 4.0 solution.

IIoT platform improves manufacturing efficiency for Lockheed Martin’s F-35 programme

ockheed Martin Aeronautics has licensed Ubisense SmartSpace for deployment at its F-35
programme at Fort Worth to improve manufacturing efficiency. For these customers sites are often vast, making it easy to lose sight of tools and assets. However, if these critical items are not in the right place at the right time it can cause lengthy and very expensive production delays. By understanding the precise location of tagged assets in real-time, as well as where they need to be at specific points in the future, SmartSpace enables the proactive staging and scheduling of assets to help meet critical milestones. The platform doesn’t just tell you
where assets are but provides a high level of control to ensure that uncontrolled or incorrect tools are not used in specified workspaces. Ubisense’s platform also offers electronic audits
of assets and tools, detailing the whereabouts of all customer furnished equipment, enabling manufacturers to respond to spot checks quickly and efficiently. By tracking the progress of parts across sub-assembly lines, at multiple plants, SmartSpace enables manufacturers to proactively plan final assembly based on delivery delays.
