EVENT PREVIEW SOUTHERN MANUFACTURING 2018

SOUTHERN MANUFACTURING ENTERS THIRD DECADE IN STYLE

The Southern Manufacturing & Electronics exhibition celebrates its 20th anniversary event from 6 - 8 February 2018, with a move to a brand new home on its traditional Farnborough site

S

ince its debut event at Thorpe Park two decades ago, the show has run in a

temporary purpose-built venue. But from February 2018, Southern Manufacturing will take up residence in the brand new £30m Hall 1 development at Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre. The ultra-modern two-storey 20,000m² venue, designed by award- winning architects Terence O’Rourke, offers world-class facilities and easy access. Southern Manufacturing will be the first major exhibition to take place in Hall 1, and marks an important step forward for the show as it enters its third decade in the top league of UK engineering shows. With around 800 companies expected to take part in 2018, Southern decisively retains its title as one of the best marketplaces for industrial hardware and engineering services in Europe. Particularly so in the area of components and sub-assemblies, which typically comprises the largest single interest area of visitors annually. A great selection of well-known UK vendors, sprinkled liberally with a variety of overseas firms which rarely, if ever, exhibit in the UK, gives visitors the opportunity to experience a much wider range of products and services than they would normally expect to find at a domestic event. The ability to address multiple sourcing issues at one show has always been one of Southern’s strongest features, and it’s one that remains top of the list for the majority of visitors. Many familiar faces return for Southern’s 20th anniversary event. HepcoMotion will be highlighting its comprehensive range of solutions to practically any motion requirement from linear to circular, and heavy duty to XYZ systems. Hepco’s DTS system will be in action with an Omron Delta robot. The ‘spider like’ robot will be picking up chocolate bars and, at speed,

moving them to the other side of the track system, demonstrating how the two leading technologies can be combined to reduce process time and increase efficiency. Kabelshlepp Metool showcases its new Master drag chain system, designed to meet the demands of Industry 4.0 applications. At this year’s show, polymer specialist,

igus, will showcase its industry leading energy chain, bearings, linear guides, flexible cables, stock bar and stock plate materials. Igus’ maintenance-and lubrication-free products are designed to cut costs and increase the service life of modern machinery by offering reduced corrosion, wear and environmental impact. One of the many new exhibitors for 2018 is Fuji Electric Europe GmbH, which will display high performance inverters offering automatically controlled motor operations for a wide variety of AC drive applications including conveyor systems, pumps, fans, HVAC and lift applications. HMK Automation, will showcase its new TM5 Cobot, which merges systems that usually function separately in conventional robots. According to the firm, the TM5 is the only collaborative robot to incorporate simple programming, a fully integrated vision system and the latest safety standards in a single unit. Southern Manufacturing is a great place to source smaller, specialist components as well, with thousands of new products being revealed at the show. CamdenBoss showcases its CFTBN range of fuse holders, which are among the first to meet the latest fire safety standard EN 60127-6 that came into force in October 2017.

Southern is the place to see, try and discuss the latest manufacturing technology

Hylec-APL launches a range of Isolation switch boxes providing fast electrical isolation for industrial machinery, commercial buildings, power supplies, security equipment and HVAC. The AC and DC models are manufactured from flame retardant polycarbonate rated to UL94V- 0, are IP67-rated and provide protection from water up to a depth of one meter. Also shown will be its DEDSS stainless steel lockable, solid door enclosures designed to provide high-quality, secure, protection for demanding electronic and electrical installations. They are IP66- rated and are able to withstand extreme temperatures and impact to IK10 specifications and are suitable for use in corrosive environments and where strict hygiene is required.

FREE TECHNICAL SEMINARS Another extremely popular feature returning for 2018 is the show’s free technical seminar programme, which once again runs in two separate theatres over all three days of the show. The comprehensive programme of sessions includes a broad range of technical topics, such as the use of collaborative robots, Industry 4.0 and 3D print, together with general business management such as effective marketing, lean implementation and the key features of the forthcoming GDPR legislation, which is set to have a substantial impact on all businesses when it comes into effect next May. A full list of sessions and the all-important booking form can be found at http://seminars.industrysouth.co.uk . Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2018 opens from 6 - 8 February and admission to the show is free. Farnborough Exhibition and Conference Centre offers free on-site car parking and is easily reached by road, air or public transport.
