EVENT PREVIEW INDUSTRY 4.0 SUMMIT 2018

INDUSTRY 4.0 SUMMIT 2018 & FACTORIES OF THE FUTURE EXPO

O

ne of the most interesting events to be launched in 2017 was the

Industry 4.0 Summit & Factories of the Future Expo in Manchester. With a very high level of speaker, and attendee, it was a great launch event and the next one promises to be larger with lots of interesting developments taking place. Event organiser, Gary Gilmour, says: “The inaugural event was very well supported, particularly in the industrial automation sector. Though much talked about, Industry 4.0 is still in a nascent state in terms of adoption. More companies are understanding what it means for them, and the opportunities that adoption of advanced technologies can do for production and industrial efficiencies, but they want to make sure that the strategy they adopt is not an expensive failure further down the line. “Our inaugural event looked at the big

picture and looked at how companies could implement industry 4.0. For the next summit the theme is ‘Making it Happen’ and we will be covering a lot of manufacturing case studies of companies who have implemented change and are happy to share their experiences.”

INDUSTRY 4.0 SUMMIT At the 2018 Industry 4.0 Summit companies sharing their knowledge include: INTEL, Bosch Rexroth, Meggitt Aerospace, GKN, Accenture, Schneider Electric, Ford, Babcock, Trumpf, Tharsus, GE Digital and IBM. Topics range from skills, training, digital twins, getting digital for less than £1k and digitalisation of a Victorian dockyard, through to implementation of cobots in the automotive industry. The Summit is supported by Gambica

and EEF, who will also co-chair through Steve Brambley, CEO Gambica and Richard Halstead, membership engagement director of the North, EEF.

S6 DECEMBER/JANUARY 2018 | INDUSTRY 4.0 & THE IIOT

The Industry 4.0 Summit, Factories of the Future Expo and Industry 4.0 Academia Summit will take place at the Manchester Central Convention Complex on 28 Feb – 1 Mar 2018

INDUSTRY 4.0 ACADEMIA SUMMIT Also appearing will be an Industry 4.0 Academia Summit that will take place on day two of the event. It is chaired by Dr Paulo Bartolo, chair of Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Manchester, and will look at the science behind Industry 4.0 and provide a chance for manufacturers and academics to get together and identify areas that offer opportunities for cutting edge research – including commercialisation. Confirmed as headline sponsor again is Bosch Rexroth. Regarding the company’s support, UK marketing manager, Sean Kilgallen, says: “We had a great experience of the last event and we were very happy with the level of new business that followed. We are looking forward to making the next event even more successful and being headline sponsor again for 2018. We hope this demonstrates how much Bosch Rexroth is committed to Industry 4.0 as a key driver in boosting UK industry’s productivity and the UK Government’s plans for made smarter.” At the last event Bosch Rexroth showed

a unique Industry 4.0 demonstrator imported from Germany that attracted a lot of attention. In February they will have a larger stand and showcasing more unique technologies that again promises to turn heads.

FACTORIES OF THE FUTURE EXPO Visitors to the free to attend Factories of the Future Expo will be able to see a range of technologies to help manufacturers digitalise their operations and make them smarter. Leading automation companies returning to exhibit include ABB, IFM, Balluff, while Omron and Festo join for the first time. IoT will be heavily featured through the

likes of sponsors Finnish company Elisa and INTEL, who in addition to hosting an Open Technology Forum, will be holding a two-day industrial IoT workshop open to companies wanting to get some hands-on IoT experience. Another company exhibiting for the first time is HMK that will be showcasing its Techman TM5 cobot. A company representitive said “Carrying out monotonous, dangerous or repetitive tasks is something that a cobot is perfect for. Placing a cobot in these areas enables its co-workers to be transitioned

to other, more important tasks. When introducing cobots, especially when installed in a truly collaborative way, it is hugely important to make sure that the immediate co-workers are taken along the journey. We look forward to meeting visitors in Manchester and to take them on a step into the future and realise the potential of this technology.” Event sales manager, Andy Pearce,

says: “We’ve been very encouraged that for a relatively new event, we have managed to gain the support of Industry 4.0 leaders such as Bosch Rexroth, ABB, INTEL, IBM and Accenture, as well as attract sponsors to the UK for the first time like Finnish IoT specialist Elisa and Germany digital companies Relayr and Crate.io. We are keen to build on the last event and attract more manufacturers to the events to see how they can make their operations 4.0 ready.” The Factories of the Future Expo is free

to visit and attendees will not only see latest technologies and solutions to make operations smarter, they’ll be able to hear presentations from experts from companies large and small on how to do so at the Open Technology Forum theatre. Participants include KTN (Knowledge Transfer Network), IBM, ABB, Zuhlke, INTEL, Monition and Balluff. Visitors will also be able to engage with event supporters Innovate UK and KTN who will have a large presence at the event and are happy to engage with companies and see how they can help manufacturer’s digitalise. KTN’s head of manufacturing, Ben Peace, comments: “We engage one-to-one with manufacturing SMEs, understand their needs and help them take a step-by-step journey into the fourth industrial revolution, making links to additional partners that can enable that journey, such as HVM Catapult, universities, and the tech providers that represent Gambica’s membership. We can also help them ascertain whether there is any funding available or additional support out there that is relevant. We look forward to meeting companies in Manchester and seeing how we can be of service.” For more information about these events, please visit the website at the address below.
