RACKS, CABINETS & ENCLOSURES PRODUCTS ENCLOSURES HELP NETWORK RAIL STAY ON TRACK MAKE A QUICK CONNECTION N

etwork Rail is the owner and infrastructure manager of the

majority of the rail network in England, Scotland and Wales. It runs, maintains and develops rail tracks, signalling, bridges, tunnels, level crossings and many stations. Every year, nearly 1.7 billion passenger journeys are made across the country’s rail infrastructure, and 100 million tonnes of freight are moved between the UK’s ports, factories and warehouses. Network Rail is also responsible for ensuring the safety, security and reliability of the rail network. The UK rail market faces

increasing demand from passenger travel, the rail freight industry, and the ongoing need for network asset replacement. Rail operators need intelligent solutions to monitor, control and optimise the electrical assets on the rail network in order to ensure installer and commuter safety. One example of this is the need to enhance the safety of switchgear in the IT network. In order to do this,

double insulated (Class II) product compliant with electrical regulations for protection against electric shock has been supplied by Schneider Electric. As part of its commitment to

meet high standards and regulations, Network Rail needed to replace the metal Functional Supply Point (FSP) 01’s on the Robin Hood Line (running between Nottingham and Worksop), bringing it in line with current safety requirements. In order to improve and deliver an

up to date installation of signalling supplies, and reduce costs, Schneider Electric engineered the FSP01 in line with Network Rail Specification NR/L2/27409. Working in close collaboration with Network Rail, Schneider Electric has developed a comprehensive range of FSP switchgear assemblies based around its core range of double insulated Class II enclosures, which provides superior protection from electric shock and scratches. In 2012, Schneider Electric

designed and built a standard range of functional supply points to Network Rail’s specification. However, the Robin Hood Line required a bespoke solution to meet its own specific requirements as a retrofit project. Working with the local RAM, Schneider Electric’s in-house design team developed the customised FSP01 solution to meet the needs. During the project, design reviews

were held at regular intervals with the RAM in order to validate progress and mitigate any potential issues. This ensured strict compliance with the specification including all the standard low voltage switchgear tests; dielectric tests; IP tests and temperature rise tests. Schneider Electric’s range of class

II FSP’s have full PADs approval, and the Robin Hood Line retrofit is based on the PADs approved solution, and has now been deployed. Alan Haigh senior asset manager, Network Rail, said: “Network Rail is delighted with the service provided...” www.schneiderelectric.co.uk

PUSH-IN TECHNOLOGY MAKES CONTACT IN NO TIME

Wires and cables often have to be connected to copper busbars when manufacturing control gear and switchgear systems. The conventional approach is time-consuming, but now, a range of maintenance-free conductor connection clamps using push-in technology, from Rittal, offers a fast method of easily and securely connecting conductors to busbars. Push-in clamps offer a range of advantages, including very quick and easy cable connection. The

maintenance-free clamps can be used for many different types of conductors. Rittal’s new conductor connection clamps now extend these benefits to busbar systems. This means panel builders and switchgear manufacturers will be able to connect cables and wires directly to busbars. The new push-in conductor connection clamps are available in two clamping ranges, 0.5 – 4 mm2

and 1.5 – 16 mm2 , and for copper

busbars 5 and 10 mm thick in each clamping range. The push-in conductor connection clamps can reduce potential defects such as incorrect

compression/torques and clamp loosening. The maintenance-free design makes the system more reliable and cuts the costs of subsequent maintenance work. www.rittal.com

CamdenBoss has launched a range of rising clamp DIN Rail mounting terminal blocks that provide a quick and effective means of making pluggable connections into DIN Rail enclosures while saving valuable PCB real estate inside the enclosure. By using DIN Rail mounting terminal

blocks, customers can make connections independently of the various DIN Rail units within a given system. As well as giving installers the flexibility of being able to place the DIN Rail terminal blocks anywhere on the rail, CamdenBoss’s CTBPD96 range offers the ability to unclip and reverse the orientation of the terminal block if necessary. This means that the installation can be rearranged for easier access once complete – a big advantage particularly during field installations – and ensures that easy access is retained even in the most cramped of applications, even if units are added later. Fitting terminal blocks to the DIN

Rail is straightforward, while reversing the terminal block is equally simple. The range of terminal blocks is available in 5mm and 5.08mm pitch versions in both flanged and non-flanged options from 6 to 24 poles. www.camdenboss.com
