PRODUCTS DISPLAYS & UIs SLIM TOUCH PANELS WITH WIDESCREEN DISPLAY

The touch panel GT707, from Panasonic, is available with a widescreen display, offering a screen ratio of 16:9. Compared with the traditional 4:3 screen ratio it provides a visualisation area enlarged by one third. With a depth of only 34mm, the

panels from the GT707 series are said to be among the slimmest in their class. They feature a compact body with a robust design and an IP65 rating for the front of the panel.

The high-resolution colour TFT display offers 65536 colours and a long-life white LED backlight. Touch screen buttons, data entry, text and images appear bright and crystal clear. The backlight intensity can be

modified according to the application requirements. The new GT707 offers

16 times more colours and a resolution that is 5 times higher than that of the previous generation GT32T-R, for example. Parameters such as

brightness and contrast, can be individually specified, for high quality legibility.

The GT707 touch panels are

equipped with a USB port and offer "through function" communication with Panasonic PLCs, meaning only one cable is necessary for programming both the HMI and the PLC. This makes it easy to simultaneously debug and program

the PLC and the GT touch panel. You can create projects for the GT707 Series HMI with the GTWIN software tool. This provides a library of objects that help you generate intuitive screens with many operator friendly features. It is also possible to use an SD memory card with the HMI. www.panasonic-electric-works.co.uk

TFT LCD SERIES OFFERS CHOICE OF DISPLAY SIZES

4D Systems has launched the gen4 CAPE series of TFT LCD display capes designed specifically for use with the BeagleBone Black single board computer. The series comprises 4.3-, 5.0- and 7.0- inch models, each equipped with a 30-pin robust FPC cable that plugs into the supplied gen4 CAPE adapter board. No additional connectors are required to operate the display since all power, control and data signals come through the FPC. Use of an adapter board, the cape that plugs directly into the BeagleBone Black, permits ease of using different display sizes to suit the application. The gen4 CAPE series comprises six models in three different sizes, with the choice of either resistive touch or capacitive touch and cover glass. The resistive touch function uses an on-board Microchip AR1021 resistive touch controller that communicates directly with the BeagleBone Black over I2

HMIs SUITABLE FOR MARITIME

Phoenix Contact has further developed its portfolio of maritime HMIs for demanding use on ships. The latest generation of the TPM 3000 series is equipped with the Cortex-A8 1 GHz processor, which supports faster display refresh and response times. The new display sizes (4.3", 5.7", and 12.1" in 16:9) also give system planners more choice. The products have two buttons on the front of the front plate for dimming the display brightness, an external horn and a floating output on the rear for connecting external signal generators. All devices are compatible with the previous models in terms of their cut- out and have important marine approvals. The ETH (10/100) and USB 2.0

interfaces can be used for networking the HMIs. Additional optional interfaces are RS-232, RS-485, and CAN. In addition, a device version without

dimmer buttons, horn, and floating output is also available in 9" and 15.4" display sizes. www.phoenixcontact.com

C in place of traditional LCD capes which utilise the

analogue inputs that are rather susceptible to external EMI. The capacitive touch models incorporate a cover lens bezel that enables the construction of a robust yet slim design with ease, utilising Focaltec CTP controller that communicates over I2

Changing the display backlight brightness is facilitated through the use of a TI TPS61165 backlight driver

IC for which a Linux driver is also provided. This method is more stable and less noisy than using PWM signals.

The gen4 CAPE series suits a range of applications that require a high-quality, easy-to-use and compact graphical display (monitor) to be incorporated into a BeagleBone Black-based design. The BeagleBone Black Wireless and BeagleBone Green boards are also supported. Prices start at US$59 for single unit quantities of the 4.3” resistive touch models. www.4dsystems.com.au

MCUs SIMPLIFY THE DESIGN OF LOW-POWER LCD APPLICATIONS

Microchip announces a family of low-power microcontrollers (MCUs) featuring Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) and intelligent analogue for driving Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD). The nine member PIC16F19197 family includes a battery-friendly LCD drive charge pump; 12-bit ADC with computation (ADC2

The charge pump ensures that LCD screens maintain consistent contrast even as battery- voltage drops. The ADC2

low-power comparator; and active clock-tuning of its high-frequency oscillator. They are said to be the first 8-bit MCUs to be optimised for popular low-power and battery-powered touch- enabled LCD applications. The PIC16F19197 family consists of 28- to 64- pin devices with up to 56 KB Flash and 4 KB RAM.

acquisition and processing tasks, making robust touch buttons and sliders easy to implement. The Active Clock-Tuning feature provides customers with a stable oscillator across the voltage and temperature operating range. This is achieved in hardware rather than relying upon software. The family also features a Real Time Clock and Calendar (RTCC) with battery backup and high-current I/O pins to directly drive the LCD backlighting. In addition, the IDLE/DOZE low- power modes and Peripheral Module Disable

(PMD) extend battery life. The MCUs can drive up to 360 LCD segments, so are suitable for battery-powered LCD applications. www.microchip.com
