SHOW PREVIEW

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics returns in February

The UK’s premier engineering show, Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2023, will take place over three days in early February at the £35 million, 20,000 sq ft Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre. The exhibition is a showcase for industry and engineering in the UK and Ireland to present their latest technologies.

T

he worlds of mechanical engineering and electronics converge at the show, which is split approximately equally between the two areas. Despite their diversity there are no physical barriers between them, allowing crossover between the different disciplines. Visitors say it is a facet of the show that is especially useful, as it encourages a wide- ranging itinerary through the exhibition halls, possibly leading to discovery of firms specialising in related technologies that would otherwise not be encountered. Technology Trails guide visitors around the event, grouping firms having expertise in specific areas. Southern Manufacturing & Electronics is the UK’s largest annual engineering show. Except for 2021, when it was cancelled due to Covid-19, the event has been running continuously since 1998, so next year marks its 25th anniversary. It moved to its present location in 2008 and was the first event to be held in the Farnborough exhibition centre after it was newly built in 2018. The show has grown continuously from a small, regional gathering of entrepreneurial companies into one of international significance. It will host more than 600 exhibitors this time and close to 10,000 people are expected to visit, if previous years are anything to go by.

Having in one location the best of electronics and mechanical engineering operating at the forefront of technology and innovating across many different sectors makes it a must-see event. Firms will highlight a vast array of high technology mechanical, electrical, electronic, optoelectronic, electromechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components and assemblies,

cables, power leads, RF cables, fibre-optic assemblies and distribution boxes. In addition to seeing long-established show exhibitors, there will be a chance to meet new faces. Taiwanese PCB manufacturer EISO Enterprise is making a first appearance, as is Bournemouth-based INDUS Engineering Services, which is planning to showcase its broad range of custom control panels, automation systems and special purpose machinery.

PCBs, connectors, sensors, as well as such items as drives, rotary encoders and linear scales.

Visitors can expect to see plant for electronics production and assembly, a hugely diverse line-up of automated equipment, and firms offering subcontract electrical engineering services including production, finishing, test and inspection. There will also be metrology equipment for both tactile and non-contact measurement and inspection, laser cutting and marking equipment, additive manufacturing machines and consumables, production and planning aids, and engineering and business software. Other no less essential products and services on offer will encompass labelling equipment, dust and fume extraction, humidity control, workplace storage systems, bespoke case and foam manufacture, plastic packaging, injection moulding, hand tools, adhesives, industrial flooring, waste removal and recycling, training and financial services. A facet of the show that makes it so compelling to visit is the strength in depth in so many areas of technology. For example, literally dozens of companies will promote their PCB prototyping, subcontract manufacturing, assembly and consultancy services as well as SMT equipment, box-build and testing. ASMPT SMT Solutions will be over from Munich to explain how it supports electronics manufacturers all over the world to set up digitalised smart factories. Much in evidence also will be wire and cable harnesses, battery

20 DECEMBER/JANUARY 2023 | ELECTRONICS TODAY

Alongside the exhibition and demonstration zones, there will be an extensive technical seminar programme, which will be especially strong this time. It will give visitors and exhibitors alike valuable learning opportunities, with a particular focus on the technical, managerial and environmental issues facing manufacturers today. There will be two programmes, one covering mechanical engineering and the other electrical and electronic engineering.

Topics to be tackled aimed at the electronics sector will include the art of effective strategy deployment; lean continuous improvement featuring team assurance and ERP/MRP push & pull; additive manufacturing - prototype to end-use parts; design for test with tips on the use of test jigs; environmental simulation testing and T&V (test and verification); the health, wellbeing and productivity of staff; commercialisation of a concept; and CE and UKCA marking - 2023 and beyond. Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2023 opens from 7th to 9th February and will co-locate again with AutoAero, a specialist theme within the exhibition devoted to aerospace and automotive engineering. There is a regular, free bus service between Farnborough’s Main and North Camp railway stations and the show. Admission and parking are also free of charge. More information and tickets are available from the show website.
