RAISING THE BAR Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2020
Staying up to date with the latest technology in design, assembly and production can prove difficult. Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2020 hopes to open up an accessible environment to industry experts looking for solutions in their various sectors, from aerospace to medical and mechanical
S
outhern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to Farnborough from February
11 to 13, 2020: this show established a new visitor record in 2019, and with the show nearing full capacity, there is every chance this number will be surpassed in 2020.
Hosting an expected total of around
800 participating companies, roughly half of the 20,000m² Farnborough International Exhibition Centre will be dedicated to electronics. Encompassing production equipment and manufacturing services, as well as components, Southern Electronics has carved out a reputation for providing a platform - a comprehensive marketplace - for electronics and contract manufacturing. This makes it an attractive prospect for a steadily rising number of overseas firms - most from continental Europe, but increasingly from regions such as India, and the Far East as well. For those seeking components,
the list of suppliers taking part is impressive. Among the leading names taking part are the three operations that comprise the Rebound Group, which together represent one of the UK’s most substantial component distribution operations. With a presence in 17 countries, its global reach makes it particularly adept at locating elusive components. Other major distributors present this year include WDS Component Parts, Optimas, Midas Electronics, Wurth Electronics UK, Schurter Electronics and Transfer Multisort Elektronik. Alternatively, from Austria, the show welcomes CODICO for the first time, showcasing its comprehensive range of components and solutions covering wired and wireless communications, embedded systems, sensors, power supplies and displays. More substantial components and sub-assemblies highlighted at the show

Another key element of the show is its free seminar programme. Highlights include Gary Griffiths, award winning author of Staying Lean, creator of the Lean Iceberg Model and partner at S.A. Partners, who will discuss how organisations have successfully delivered results for their business by embedding and sustaining ‘lean and continuous improvement’. Steven Barr and Ravi Gidoomal, of Edge Digital Manufacturing, discuss how to develop a digital roadmap for your business and
identify the right digital technologies include power
supplies, enclosures, industrial memory and batteries. Medical, smart and configurable power supplies will be demonstrated by Cosel Europe, for example. Connected by UART or PMBus, users can monitor and control up to 85 commands on the power supply, including digitally adjusting output voltage, a constant current-constant voltage mode, and life expectancy. Alternatively, Relec will exhibit a range of AD/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC products; Midas’ new E-Paper displays will make an appearance – a great many products to see the light of day at the event. Along with components, the show is also an important marketplace for production hardware. Advanced Manufacturing Systems will be exhibiting the competitively-priced Neoden4 pick and place machine, featuring a placement rate of 10,000cph, fiducial/ camera alignment and electronic feeders. Blundell Production Equipment returns to the show for 2020 with its proprietary wave soldering and solder recover machines, together with solutions from Yamaha, Fritsch, Kurtz Ersa and IBL, among others.
The seminar
programmes at Southern Manufacturing & Electronics look to inform and acclimatise
to maximise value. Mark Knowlton from Locate in Kent will present ‘Delivering Industry 4.0’ – an examination of how SMEs can benefit from embracing digital manufacturing. Nick Aitken and Dr Alex Martin of RINA take a look at ‘Counterfeit components and product compliance challenges’, while Dr Chris Robertson discusses ‘Life after Brexit – What next in trade relations and product regulation’. And finally, Mike Foster, managing director of The CE Marking Association, will explore another aspect of the post-Brexit landscape in ‘CE Marking 2020 and Beyond – How the changes will affect all manufacturers’. The Farnborough International Conference and Exhibition Centre offers complimentary car parking for 3,500 vehicles and is well-served by road and public transport links. A regular free shuttle bus service operates from both of Farnborough’s mainline railway stations directly to the exhibition. And the venue itself provides a plethora of facilities, including a complimentary Wi-Fi service in the foyer area, as well as high quality catering outlets.
