Controlled Pneumatics, the rapidly evolving compressed air technology from Festo, is said to be opening up new applications for pneumatics. According to the company, the technology delivers more precision and control than ever, while having the potential to dramatically reduce energy use. This is demonstrated in the VTEP proportional valve terminal which offers high precision, fast response times, and dynamic control. The VTEP provides extremely sensitive pressure control, down to less than 1mbar, ideal for applications such as wafer polishing or patch clamping in life science. In addition, Controlled Pneumatics uses high-precision piezo valves to reduce compressed air consumption by up to 50%. This level of control enables the VTEP to speed-up production while ensuring that manufactured goods are of a higher quality, the company explains. At less than 120mm wide, the VTEP is the most compact proportional
valve terminal for pressure control with 10 independent work channels. There are three versions, with 2-, 3-, and 5-valve positions, which can all be easily integrated for multi-channel applications. Pressure and vacuum can be combined in the control range of -1 up to 6 bar positive pressure. The individual valves can be controlled to control the pressure, block, or exhaust the system pressure. Bürkert Fluid Control Systems’ new Type 2852 2-way proportional valve with pressure compensation is said to offer high flow rates as well as higher pressure operations compared to equivalent size valves. It can handle oxygen, air, natural gases, and fuel gases. According to the company, the valve is up to 50% smaller than
alternative pressure compensation valves and has a streamlined form which includes direct inlet pressure control without the requirement for a separate pressure controller. In addition, it delivers high flow rates, with a kVs flow coefficient value of 0.2m³/h, and a pressure range up to 7 bar. The valve design also provides high performance positioning, achieving a repeat accuracy deviation of less than 1%, and response sensitivity deviation lower than 0.1%. Featuring an expansive setting range of over 1:500, the single width design covers the equivalent scale of orifice sizes between 1mm and 3mm. The valve’s compact dimensions and low power
consumption make it well-suited for applications in analytical and medical devices.

During wafer production, the variable contact pressure of the individual polishing chambers on the polishing unit can be controlled extremely precisely by the VTEP, with the even pressure guaranteeing excellent quality results across the entire processing surface. The VTEP proportional valve terminal is also suitable for many applications in web control, such as the production of battery foils. It communicates over EtherCat in real time.
