Germany has produced more than 30 cutting systems, known for their quality, reliability and versatility. One of its most popular systems is the OFS-HE3 horizontal contour machine designed for high-accuracy and high-speed cutting automation applications such as upholstery, mattresses, furniture, packaging, medical applications and various automotive

applications (Figure 1). The system receives polyurethane foam blocks
in a variety of sizes, with width options up to 2600mm (8.5 ft), height options up to 1500mm (4.92 ft) and lengths of up to 3400mm (11.15 ft). Users load the blocks onto a gear-driven table that guides all motion on the horizontal axes. The cutting tool, one of the micro-toothed circulating knives that Bäumer manufactures in its own production facility, is 3mm (0.12in) wide by 0.6mm (0.024 in) thick (Figure 2).
Guiding the knife’s precise, high-speed,
movement on the Z axis is a steel framework that hovers above the foam block. The machine head is the heaviest moving part of the system. Weighing more than one ton, it is composed of welded steel, reinforcement plates that keep the knife from bending, motors and other components. Helmut Groos, head of mechanical engineering
