PRODUCTS PNEUMATICS & HYDRAULICS SOLUTIONS FOR ATEX ENVIRONMENTS

An in-depth knowledge of the ATEX world has enabled ATAM to provide various families of products – certified by internationally recognised external bodies – for the most widespread pneumatic and hydraulic applications, covering a variety of risk categories. This is beneficial as ATEX environments, with their potentially explosive atmospheres, are more widespread than is often realised. In addition to the obvious environments of the oil industry and mines, many other situations warrant an ATEX approach due to the presence of gas and dust which can combine to create a volatile atmosphere capable of reacting to ignition sources such as hot surfaces, electrical material, electrostatic charges and mechanical sparks. In fact an estimated 70% of industrial settings have to deal with these problems. So, ATAM has studied its clients’ operating fields with potentially explosive

atmospheres to understand where its coils and valves would be used. One example is the 257 encapsulated coil for heavy-duty pneumatic applications. This is certified

ATEX 2014/34/EU and IECEx for gas (Zone 1) and dust (Zone 21) and has been approved even for mine applications (Group I, Category M2). The coil features a UL-approved housing and includes a precision thermal fuse placed in direct contact with the external surface of the encapsulation. All encapsulation materials have undergone extensive flame tests to meet the requirements of all three Glow Wire Tests. Domestic applications are covered by ISO EN 60335-1 requirements. The 204, 394 and 209 coils are for Zone 2 and Zone 22 applications (normal protection level). These coils were created as standard products and their safety was later enhanced to meet ATEX requirements as non-sparking coils. They are equipped with a wireless DIN connection and are ideal for applications up to Category 3 GD according to Directive ATEX 2014/34/EU. Also available is the 455 coil for heavy-duty hydraulic applications. This

has an Ex-d explosion-proof casing certified ATEX and IECEx for gas (Zone 1), dust (Zone 21) and mines (Category M2). This features a micro-cast coated low carbon steel body and flanges, which undergo a zinc and nickel treatment to improve their resistance to oxidation. The coil is supplied without wire and cable gland. Based on the client’s requirements, it can be powered with a voltage ranging from six to 240V, both AC and DC. It can also work with an operating pressure equal to 350 dynamic bar and a room temperature ranging from -60˚C to +80˚C with T4, T5 and T6 temperature classes. The 481 encapsulated coil is for the most common hydraulic applications. This is the first Ex-m encapsulated

coil with an external armour (and not with the explosion-proof casing) for ATEX environments with T3 temperature class for gas (Zone 1), dust (Zone 21), and mines (Category M2) that doesn’t need to be strongly de-powered as coils with explosion-proof casings do to ensure temperature classes T5 and T6 (low surface temperature). The body and flanges of this feature a zinc and nickel anti-corrosion coating that can withstand up to 240 hours of salt spray to white rust and up to 720 hours to red rust. The coil has an IP65/IP69K protection rating according to the IEC-EN 60529 standard and can be powered with a voltage ranging from six to 240V, both AC and DC. It measures 22mm in internal diameter, 45mm in external diameter, and 54.5mm in height. To further meet application demands, the company can also provide custom-made products.

MULTI-STAGE MAGNETICALLY

DRIVEN PUMPS Two new multi-stage pumps have been added to the Finish Thompson DB Series range of leak-free, magnetically driven centrifugal pumps. Available from Michael Smith

Engineers, the new models feature two impellers (the MSDB2) or three (the MSDB3), meaning they can generate more pressure at low flows. Available in polypropylene or PVDF,

these are ideal for low flow/high head pumping applications, covering flows to 16m³/hr and differential heads to over 60m with minimum flow capabilities as low as 5lit/min. Due to their magnetic drive

technology, there are no seals to replace and zero leakage. They feature Neodymium-Iron-Boron inner magnets encapsulated in unfilled polypropylene or PVDF for superior magnet protection and chemical resistance. The outer drive allows measurement-free drive installation for perfect magnet alignment and therefore maximum power transmission. Optional components and materials

are available to suit more demanding applications. When fitted with chemical grade carbon bushing, the pumps can be dry-run for extended periods. MSDB pumps can be mounted

to NEMA and IEC motors and a variety of connections including NPT or BSP threads, adjustable flanges or union fittings.

SOLENOID VALVES FOR ACCURATE DISPENSING OF CRITICAL FLUIDS

With semiconductor node sizes dropping below ten nanometers and wafer test cells demanding greater efficiency and throughput, semiconductor equipment manufacturers need to dispense and meter small volumes of critical fluids under intense operating conditions. These high-performance systems demand field-proven fluidic components capable of near-digital response. To meet demands, the compact Lee VHS Series

solenoid valve is designed to accurately dispense criti cal fluids through jewelled orifices. Precise droplets of water or coolant can be dispensed onto chips during packaging and classification, and precise volumes of helium can be metered for thermal process control and wafer probing instruments. These offer a response time as low as 250µs and allow near instant dispensing of

32

spherical droplets as small as ten nanoliters. The ultra-fast VHS Series dispense valve has

a life of 250 million cycles. Simple to integrate into new and legacy automated systems, this is constructed from materials known for compatibility with a wide range of liquids and gases used in the semiconductor industry. According to the company, the VHS Series

valves are field proven in semiconductor classification cooling systems, wafer probe devices, surface energy measure ment devices, and many other specialised cutting-edge applications. They are suitable for applications requiring perfect droplets, metering of nanoliters of a critical fluid, or injection into a flow stream.
