At its site in Kuala Lumpur, MCC Labels SDN BHD uses Iwasaki die-cutting machines to cut printed labels for use on a range of products – from drinks bottles to packaged food products. The company has global operations working with customers in sectors ranging from food and beverage, automotive and chemicals, to home care and healthcare. However, with the variable frequency drive (VFD) on the machine proving
unreliable, resulting in downtime and maintenance, the company turned to Shen Shiang Electrical, a customer of Invertek Drives Far East, for a solution. “The existing variable frequency drive was large, taking up space within
the machine, and difficult to control or to change the parameter settings. This was causing problems for the MCC maintenance team when it came to resolving issues quickly or changing the machine’s control settings,” said Tony Gan of Shen Shiang Electrical. So, a compact and easy to set up Optidrive E3 11kW 15HP, three phase, 380v-480V VFD was chosen as the replacement. The precise digital control on the VFDs keypad made ongoing control much easier too, the company added. The Optidrive E3 includes 14 default parameter settings that make it suitable for easy installation into most applications. It also has a total of 50
parameters available for bespoke settings; and it can be switched between industrial, pump and fan modes depending on the application. The drive can also be commissioned rapidly using the Optistick Smart Bluetooth and NFC software on smartphones and PC. It comes with Modbus RTU and Can as standard, and has the ability to integrate it directly with the machine’s keypad. The E3 is available in IP20, IP66/Nema4X outdoor and indoor enclosures, in single and three-phase.

www.heason.com CONTROLLING DESALINATION PLANT PUMPS WITH VSDS
Having been in service since 1999, the desalination plant on the La Rosière site in Jersey needed a major upgrade due to the ever-growing need for water on the island. This would increase the plant’s capacity from 6Ml/day to 10.8 Ml/day, enough to meet around half of the island’s daily demand for water. For the upgrade, a large number of
new pumps were needed, almost all of which would need to be controlled by AC variable speed drives. After investigating the options, Jersey Water decided the Danfoss VLT AQUA Drives were the most suitable choice on both technical and commercial grounds. The largest of the new drives were required to
control two high-pressure pumps with 600kW motors operating at 690V, which are fed from a custom 11kV/690V transformer. For these, 630kW VLT AQUA Drives were chosen. Other drives for the project operate from 400V supplies and include three with 160kW ratings as well as nine with ratings between 55kW and 18.5kW. For all of these applications, VLT AQUA Drives were used. In addition, Danfoss supplied two 110kW VLT MCD-series energy-saving soft start units for the seawater intake submersible pumps. Because these drives and soft starts would be used close to the sea, conformally coated printed circuit boards were specified to provide additional protection against corrosion.
16 OCTOBER 2020 | DESIGN SOLUTIONS As part of the project, the new drives needed to fit into limited space, so
the compact construction of the VLT AQUA Drives was an important benefit. Further space was saved by using IP54 versions of the drives which require no additional enclosure for protection. Although the drives offer excellent harmonic performance without the need for external filters, Jersey Water decided that, because minimal harmonic generation was such an important requirement for this project, it would still be desirable to install filters as a precautionary measure. Danfoss therefore supplied active harmonic filters for use with the largest drives. Malcolm Berridge, chief engineer & water
supply manager for Jersey Water, commented: “The upgraded plant has now been in service for many months, and the drives have fully lived up to expectations in terms of performance and reliability. They are also making a big contribution to the enhanced energy efficiency of the plant, which has increased by between 36% and 38% since the upgrade.”
