APPLIED TECHNOLOGY DRIVES & MOTORS A SMOOTH AND QUIET SOLUTION FOR RESIDENTIAL LIFTS


Purpose-designed permanent magnet motors from Lafert have been specified for two panoramic lifts in a residential tower in Ankara, Turkey. This application benefited from such features as their smooth, low-noise running, simplified installation and reduced energy consumption. According to the company, their smooth and


quiet characteristics are a result of their stepless operation, which eliminates the need for speed reducing gearboxes, and because the motors are TENV (Totally Enclosed Non-Ventilated) units without fans, which eliminates windage noise. Being compact, self-contained drive units, the


motors have been installed directly within the lift shafts, which avoids the need for a machine room, thereby freeing up space within the building. Machine rooms are normally required for the traditional and inefficient motor/gearbox systems, the company explains. These also have high maintenance/lubrication demands, and the potential for fluid leaks, consequent contamination and associated fire risks. The permanent magnet motors can, depending upon lift load, provide energy savings of between 45% and 70%. Available with torque outputs from 140


to 850Nm, the Lafert motors provide a fast, smooth, low-noise ride for payloads from 240 to 1600kg with 2:1 roping, and 320 to 800kg with 1:1 roping. Power supply options are both single and three-phase via the appropriate drive. Operating speeds range from 0.5m/sec to


2.5m/sec, while internal encoders ensure smooth speed control and precise lift car positioning. The integral brakes are in line with harmonised standards EN81-1:1998 + A3 amendment and EN81-20/50:2014, and the safety requirement of Directive 2014/33/EU. Options include dual braking systems for enhanced safety, manual brake levers to facilitate maintenance, induction sensors for demanding applications, and cURus brakes compliant with the ASME A17 Safety Code for the North American market.


VFDS KEEP THE WATER FLOWING EFFICIENTLY


During the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Malaysia, the organisers wanted to ensure a constant flow of water reached all floors and apartments of the seven high-rise accommodation blocks in the athletes’ village. Over 20,000 people would be residing here during the event. The water supply needed to be both constant and efficient, particularly as in the long-term


the apartments would be sold for private residential accommodation, meaning an energy and cost-efficient long-term solution was required. “With potentially so many people accessing the water supply at peak periods before and after the daily games, the organisers were worried the supply wouldn’t be able to cope, particularly at the upper-storey levels of the accommodation blocks that rise above 10 floors,” explained Khairul Azhari of Invertek Drives Malaysia. To help meet the requirements, Invertek Drives Malaysia, working with system integrator


DSC Engineering, installed and commissioned four Optidrive E3 IP66 variable frequency drives (VFD) within the water pumping stations in the basement of each apartment building. These could be used to control 4kW pumps. Azhari commented: “At peak periods all pumps in the accommodation blocks would need to


be operational, while at the quieter times the numbers could be reduced, saving energy as well as wear and tear on the system.” In addition to the pumps in the basement, pumps were installed at level 10 to boost the


water supply to the upper and roof-top levels. Azhari added: “It was good to see Invertek’s variable speed drive technology playing a


significant, if unseen, part in the historic Asian Games.” Invertek
