A celebration of the best in UK manufacturing and engineering excellence and innovation will take place at the NEC in June 2022. This includes the launch of three events. Nineteen Events is working closely with MAKE UK, IMechE, IED and stakeholders from across the industry to build and deliver the week-long event. Live events that showcase the complete manufacturing and engineering solutions and supply chain will run alongside additional virtual events. Engineering Expo is dedicated to

the driving force behind manufacturing. Keynotes lifting the lid on the latest developments and interesting engineering projects will run alongside practical workshops and an innovative showcase of the latest technologies and solutions. Design Engineering Expo focuses on the challenges and innovations

at the heart of the sector. Covering electronics, embedded design through to testing, the event will showcase the latest technologies propelling the future of design engineering. Manufacturing Expo will cover all aspects of the manufacturing

process and supply chain, showcasing the best in British suppliers, innovations and technologies to enhance performance. Running alongside the exhibitions will be a full programme of free to attend content, including keynotes, how to sessions, and workshops.

FREE WHITE PAPER EXAMINES THE IMPLICATIONS OF BREXIT FOR MACHINE BUILDERS

‘The implications of Brexit for machine builders in the UK, EU and the rest of the world’ has been published by Hold Tech Files and can be downloaded free of charge from: https://www.holdtechfiles.eu/links-and-resources. According to the company, this is essential reading for machine

builders, system integrators and suppliers of safety components, as well as manufacturing companies that create assemblies of machines requiring CE marking or UKCA marking as a whole. Now the UK has left the EU and the two parties have agreed a new

trading relationship, there is finally some clarity for machine builders. The new white paper looks at the full range of scenarios, including UK machine builders serving the home market, and machine builders exporting to the UK from the EU or anywhere else in the world. Machinery placed on the market in Great Britain now has to be UKCA

marked instead of being CE marked. The white paper highlights the differences between these two marking systems and also explains why CE marking is still required in Northern Ireland. The paper also discusses how ‘designated’ standards have replaced

‘harmonised’ standards for UKCA marking, and the change to ‘Approved’ bodies from ‘Notified’ bodies for conformity assessment of Annex IV machinery. In addition, it makes machine builders aware of the rules of origin, which relate to customs declarations when UK-based machine builders export to the EU; and EU Regulation 2019/1020, which comes into force on 16 July 2021. While this new Regulation aims to strengthen the requirements for market surveillance, it also places new obligations on machine builders exporting to the EU.

NEW EVENT TO CELEBRATE THE BEST IN UK MANUFACTURING AND ENGINEERING “There has never been a more important time for our sector to pull

together and to work together, to create a shared agenda, help promote and encourage manufacturing and engineering innovation, and see our sectors grow, and Manufacturing and Engineering Week will do exactly that. I am delighted to be part of the M&E Week Advisory Board and that MAKE UK are a partner for this groundbreaking event,” commented Stephen Phipson, CBE, Chief Executive, MAKE UK. “Design doesn’t stop – it’s dynamic, forthright

and exciting, and the IED is supporting the launch of the Design Engineering Expo to help showcase all of these elements and the outstanding work of the design community now and in the future,” added Libby Meyrick,

chief executive at the Institution of Engineering Designers. Ed Tranter, event director, Manufacturing & Engineering Week, said:

“Manufacturing & Engineering Week is an incredible opportunity to support and serve one of the most important sectors in the UK economy. We are delivering brand new live events and an exclusive series of virtual events that celebrate manufacturing and engineering, the innovation, the technologies and the role it plays in the green agenda and our future.” www.MandEWeek.co.uk

RS SUPPORTS BSB CHAMPIONSHIPS

RS Components (RS) is supporting the GR MotoSport team at this year’s Bennetts British Superbike (BSB) championships. RS PRO has tool partnership status, demonstrating RS’s commitment to helping young people fulfil their potential: the aim of the GR MotoSport team is to promote young riders through to title glory. Storm Stacey joined the team last year and, at the age of 16, was the youngest rider in the championship. RS managing director UK & Ireland,

Emma Botfield, said: “Stacey is a great young rider with a long racing career ahead of him, and we know our RS PRO range of high quality mechanical tools will be more than up to the job of helping the maintenance team keep the bikes up to scratch, and on winning form.” The RS PRO range of tools available

he issue of encouraging students into STEM-related careers has

been ongoing, however it seems that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on this. According to a new report by EngineeringUK (www.engineeringuk.com) and seven

engineering and careers organisations, 76% of the careers leaders and STEM teachers surveyed say that it has become more difficult to engage with employers since the start of the pandemic, with many saying that careers activities have been put on hold because of time pressures. The report is therefore calling on the government to invest

£40 million in improving access to careers provision to enable more young people to understand the opportunities available in STEM careers. The full story can be found on our website.
