FEATURE CABLES & CONNECTORS

Connectors go sky high

Rugged and miniature connectivity solutions from Fischer Connectors have been designed into a new multi-functional,

D

esigned in Hexadrone’s workshops in the Haute-Loire in France, the Tundra (www.tundra.hexadrone.fr) is a rugged and modular, multi-

rotor drone which is the result of over three years of development. In its serial version, this multifunctional unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is designed and manufactured as a development hub for integrators, with its body equipped with numerous interfaces that allow the integration of accessories, sensors and other modules – or the development of new ones. This enables the Tundra to adapt to custom features and rapid changes in the state of the art, which also helps it combat obsolescence. Furthermore, the drone’s arms are interchangeable and easy to remove, with three different types available depending on the missions and flight scenarios planned. With the most durable arms, the Tundra can carry a payload of up to four kilos for a flight time of 30 minutes. Suitable for use in harsh conditions, the drone is robust and waterproof,

while transportation and assembly in the field are easy as the landing gear can be fitted and the arms screwed on in less than a minute. To meet the requirements for modularity, reliability, durability,

ruggedness and ease of use, Hexadrone specified Fischer Connectors’ high-performance, ultra-robust, push-pull connectivity solutions.

MEET THE REQUIREMENTS To meet the application demands, Fischer’s UltiMate USB 2.0 connector, which is waterproof and reliable in all conditions, was chosen. The standard interfaces can accommodate external modules linked, among others, by Fischer MiniMax connectors and cabling, which optimise

A RUGGED SOLUTION

Meeting or exceeding the performance requirements of MIL 83513-G and MIL-DTL 55302G to reduce space and weight in the most extreme environments – including defence, space, motorsport, civil aviation, UAVs and robotics – Nicomatics’ 1.27mm pitch EMM interconnects are said to offer a 40% space reduction over their parent CMM Series and a 20% space saving when compared to standard Micro D connectors. On a 1.27mm pitch in 04 to 60 pin configurations, the EMM

Series is highly modular, suited to both board to board (thanks to their secure wiping length) and board to wire (from gauge 24 to gauge 30) configurations, with male and female thru-hole and SMT straight and 90˚ variants as well as cabled versions available. For extreme environments, the EMM Series is qualified to

withstand vibration, shock, extreme temperature cycling, fluid immersion, humidity and salt spray corrosion. For space applications, they are certified to meet the ASTM E595 (ECSS- Q-ST-70-02C) specification for thermal vacuum outgassing. Recent customer

applications include a sophisticated missile actuation system, and the TUM Hyperloop pod motherboard.

16 JUNE 2021 | DESIGN SOLUTIONS modular, drone. But why were these chosen?

the high-density miniaturisation of on-board electronics, such as a companion computer, a storage module, a security key or a lidar that the Tundra can be fitted with for certain aerial remote-sensing missions using lasers. “Since connectivity lies at the heart of this rugged UAV, our high-

performance solutions proposed in this modular offering cover the whole range of integrators’ technical requirements in terms of robustness and reliability, miniaturisation, sealing up to IP68, and data transmission,” commented Guy Lacroix, director of Fischer Connectors France. The serial production of the Tundra, made possible thanks to the

construction of a new building in Saint Ferréol d’Auroure in the Haute-Loire, is the logical next step in this drone’s development. Alexandre Labesse, Hexadrone’s chairman and founder, said: “With this multifunctional, modular tool carrier, our customers are opening up the field of possibilities in their collaborative projects and lowering their development costs when they adapt the drone to users’ new needs and new technologies on the market. This is not possible with most of today’s drones, which are designed for a single type of use and quickly become obsolete due to rapid technological advances. In response to obsolescence, we’ve opted for adaptability and durability."

PUSH-IN CONNECTOR SWITCHES

A range of 22mm control panel switches from IDEC are now available from Foremost Electronics. Often used in control panel and machine building applications, the Push-In termination technology option is available on the industry standard YW and HW series and the CW series (flush mounting) switches. These are designed for 22mm mounting and available as a push button, selector switch, key selector switch and pilot light/indicators. With the push-in connection

technology, the force on the conductor is generated by a pressure spring made of high-quality stainless steel. The spring sits in a cage and is automatically opened upon connection and only released when a release tool is used. The IDEC S3 push-in principle greatly reduces the amount of time required to wire a control panel. The range includes the cost-effective YW series (22mm industrial switch family)

which delivers all the key features required by the industrial automation market, including push button, illuminated push button, key and selector switch. Also available is the CW series (22mm flush design industrial switch) for applications such as medical appliances, consumer products and the food industry. Finally, the HW series (22mm industrial switch) is IDEC’s largest portfolio of switches and actuators for the industrial automation market.
