has proved particularly interesting this month. This started off following an igus event I attended towards the end of last year in which the company launched the Mobile Shore Power Outlet (iMSPO). Ships come in a huge range of sizes, so choosing the location in which to install a fixed shore power outlet that lines up with each vessel is particularly challenging. To overcome the problem, the iMSPO is a flexible, self-propelled, socket system that delivers medium-voltage shore power directly to vessels, regardless of where they are moored at ports. This ensures full berth coverage without the need for multiple fixed installations which can result in zero dead spots where the vessels cannot connect. Turn to page 39 to find out more.

Design has built a bespoke hydraulic test rig to help Anemoi Marine Technologies advance the performance of its wind-assisted propulsion system for ships (page 20); and why bearings are the quiet workhorses of maritime operations (page 35). Furthermore, we look at an application from Nidec Drives Africa, where it has engineered a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Motor Control Centre (MCC) for a Ship Loader in Australia (please turn to page 46).
