EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS T
he release of the Grenfell report last month serves as a reminder of the impact of the tragic event which saw 72 lives lost.
The report has been widely welcome by industry bodies which have called for continued progress to be made under the Building Safety Act. The Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) committed itself to driving the necessary reforms in building and fire safety engineering practices, while the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) is calling for continued progress, specifically in regards to competence and compliance.
It’s timely therefore that one of the highlighted features in this month’s issue of BSEE is on Safety, Security & Fire Protection in commercial buildings.
On pg 34, Glyn Hauser, of doorset manufacturer JELD-WEN UK draws attention to the influx of statutory guidelines relating to fire safety following the tragedy, in particular the formal introduction of the ‘Golden Thread’ concept, now enshrined in law for higher-risk properties, as defined by the Building Safety Act 2022. Added to that, on pg 35, John O’Sullivan, of testing, inspection & certification specialist Bureau Veritas, highlights the role of Responsible Persons, Building Managers and Service Engineers and their responsibility for fire door safety.
Other features this month include our first Bridging the Gap training supplement (pg 21); Pumps, Waste Management & Water Treatment (pg12); and Lighting & Lighting Controls (pg 28). Enjoy!
