BRIDGING THE GAP
INTRODUCING BRIDGING THE GAP T
he shortage of skilled workers in the sector has long been a concern, one that industry bodies and leading businesses have been attempting to address.
Needless to say, the result could be dire if we are unable to boost the pool of workers who possess the skills and expertise needed to design, install and maintain complex building systems. It’s hard to imagine an ideal world where skilled workers from all walks of life, both men and women, are joining the industry and looking forwarded to a long and illustrious career within its ranks.
Welcome to our first Bridging the Gap education and training supplement aimed at the building services industry
So how do we get to this panacea? If we are to remain competitive, technologically advanced and innovative, it’s going to take a collaborative effort between industry stakeholders, educational institutions and government bodies, directly targeting skills. With the climate challenge and associated Net Zero carbon emissions deadline thrown into the mix, the urgency to upskill on a massive scale is even more pressing. This is especially so when considering the government’s challenging renewable heating installation targets. In this, our first Bridging the Gap Supplement, industry bodies as well as leading manufacturers offer some insight into the scale of the challenge, while also revealing what they are doing in a bid to address the skills crisis. On pg 22 The National Association of Air Duct Specialists (NAADUK) Training Academy discusses benefits of vocational qualifications through work placed learning, as a way to bridge the gap for Grandfather Rights.
Meanwhile on pg 24 Carrier reinforces its dedication to training and inspiring the next generation with the opening of the manufacturer’s brand-new training academy which will give trainee engineers hands on experience with the company’s products. Moving onto pg 26 there are some details about exciting apprenticeship opportunities from the Automatic Door Suppliers Association and also the North East Institute of Technology.
The skills gap in the building services industry is a significant concern, one that will not easily be overcome. That said it is good to see top firms and groups stepping up to the plate to prepare for and to safeguard the future of the building services sector.
