e must work together on the strategy to put this right. To bridge this skills gap, we need a verifiable and demonstrable process for the core of the ventilation

maintenance industry to gain their qualification and provide a framework for the industry to move forwards. NAADUK Training Academy have been working with industry partners and the awarding body to provide experienced workers with this faster route to qualification. Demonstrating competence is a necessity and through experienced worker routes we are taking steps to reduce the loss of knowledge as many thousands leaving the industry at a stroke.

So how do we prove competence?

As part of bridging the gap we must look into the Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviors(SKEB) of individuals to prove their competence as well as the methods of qualification. The necessary route for the ventilation industry, as we see it, is via vocational qualifications through work placed learning and assessment curriculum measuring the competency of individuals whilst performing their daily activities.

Vocational qualifications, such as NVQ’s, SVQs and SCQF rated qualifications, are those that combine classroom or distance learning with on-the-job learning and experience. Allowing learners to work on actual projects and gain

relevant. Within the ventilation industry there are several vocational qualifications that can prove competence through assessment to the National Occupational Standards(NOS). The Vocational Qualifications in the ventilation industry are: SVQ Level 2 - Heating and Ventilating Ductwork Installation at SCQF Level 5 SVQ Level 3 – Heating and Ventilating Ductwork Planning and Installation at SCQF Level 6 GV3L 04 Level 3 Ventilation Maintenance Award at SCQF Level 6

 experienced workers?

As part of the vocational qualification process there is a route for the experienced worker. Their prior experience is recognized and through witness testimony and demonstration of knowledge, that individual can gain their qualification quickly and efficiently, at a time when workers across the industry need to demonstrate their abilities at speed. The awarding bodies for our industry have identified new ways for individuals to prove their experience reducing the time spent on their qualification as long as they can provide sufficient evidence throughout the process.

Do Candidates Require 

All the vocational qualifications in the ventilation industry are work based learning and this is a critical part of the individuals journey. Being able to work and learn through the working environment means that it is more aligned with the needs of the individual and companies

looking to upskill themselves and their staff. By using digital learning platforms as well as different types of work placed assessments makes the journey to qualification less obstructive.

How does this work for 

Each individual coming onto a vocational qualification gets an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). In the context of vocational qualifications this is a personalized timetable that outlines a learner’s goals, the steps needed to achieve those goals, and the support required throughout their educational journey.

By establishing partnerships between qualification providers and employers means that as an industry we can improve the standards of individuals within our industry. Employees can upskill their personnel as well as ensuring the vocational qualification meets the company’s needs.



Using the experienced worker approach as well as the standard portfolio route for candidates means each learning journey is different and is unique to that individual.

By focusing on the individual, the ventilation sector in the UK can better align vocational qualifications and relevant prior experience with industry requirements. This ultimately improves the overall skill level and professionalism within the field. This will bridge the gap in the sector and keep valued, skilled individuals in our industry.
