his month I’ve been reminded about the potential dangers to health from untreated water and learnt how poor water quality and contaminants can harm the efficiency of heating systems, thanks to a visit to ADEY’s research centre and water testing laboratory. The company’s experts were on hand to show me around, share their knowledge and provide plenty of technical insight. Through its UKAS accredited Research Centre, ADEY is able to provide one of the most advanced water testing services available for local authorities, housing associations, utilities companies, contractors and professional installers. The lab offers a 24-hour turnaround of samples, providing a full analysis report and also recommended actions based

on the water quality, ensuring thorough protection.
The lab represents a significant investment for ADEY, as it has installed some of the most advanced testing equipment available, which comes at a high cost. But it’s certainly paying off as the lab provides a powerful tool for the company that proves the need for regular water testing and the benefits of using the correct treatment products.
When contaminated water poses a risk to human health, it goes without saying that it should be tested regularly in order to reduce and ideally eliminate the potentially fatal consequences from bacteria such as Legionella altogether. In closed systems the risks are more associated with efficiency, equipment failure and increased costs. As modern

heating systems are built to be more efficient, so the tolerances are becoming tighter and therefore they are more easily blocked and damaged by contaminants. Regular testing and use of the correct chemical treatments can help solve these problems, keep systems running well and save unnecessary costs. I was very impressed by the lab facilities and professional approach being taken by ADEY and we’ll be covering this in more detail in a future issue.
While on the subject of water, I was lucky enough to be invited to Italy recently by Mitsubishi Electric.
The trip provided an opportunity to not only visit Mitsubishi’s Climaveneta factory and testing facility in Belluno, but also the chance to see an interesting HVAC installation at the La Fenice Theatre in Venice. You can read more about the challenges this posed and how they were overcome on page 12 of this issue.
