n recent years our climate has become much warmer, with carbon dioxide levels (CO2) at the highest they’ve been in 650,000 years. Making changes to our lives and reducing our carbon footprint is important. A lot of people recycle, take the train instead of the car, or buy electricity from a company that provides 100 per cent renewable energy. These are all great steps to take, but one of the biggest contributors to our carbon footprint is something we often don’t think about – the energy used to heat our homes and hot water.

Climate change targets


The Committee of Climate Change (CCC) expresses that UK’s legally binding targets to challenge climate change are not being met. In fact, the energy used in homes now accounts for 14 per cent of total UK emissions, and has continued increasing since 2016. Around 4.5 million homes overheat with another 1.8 million people now living in areas at significant risk of flooding.


Baroness Brown, chair of the CCC, released a statement in response to Dame Judith Hackitt’s final report in February 2019 into building regulations, which said: “This report confirms what we have long suspected, UK homes are largely unprepared for climate change. The government have an opportunity to act and there must be compliance with stated building designs and standards.” Simply put, there is no way in which the UK can meet the legally-binding climate change targets that Parliament has determined, unless we begin improving on residential housing emissions, and apply the measures outlined in Dame Judith Hackitt’s final report.


Panasonic invests heavily in R&D and is known for its innovative technology and sustainable products. It recently introduced the Aquarea range of air to water heat pumps as part of the ‘Panasonic Environmental Vision for 2050’ to help homes lower their emissions from heating and cooling. The devotion and commitment to challenging climate change is something Panasonic have high on their agenda.

At present, homes in the UK are still being built with gas driven appliances and poor insulation. Even if we stopped emitting greenhouse gases today and switched to low carbon solutions such as switching to heat pumps, global warming would continue to happen for


several more decades. It takes time for the planet to respond to change, gases such as CO2 linger in the atmosphere for hundreds of years. One in eight of all global illnesses are the direct result of CO2 pollution. Recently Panasonic introduced Nanoe X technology, designed to improve indoor air purification and cleansing the lingering pollution, whilst working simultaneously with Panasonic’s other heating and cooling solutions. Panasonic can help to lower carbon emitted from homes to help create cleaner and heathy air, an essential step forward.


Housing for the future


There have been considerable efforts to adapt the UK’s housing stock to help lower the impacts of the changing climate, but local authorities are not acting on these due to a lack of resources, knowledge and funds – this needs to change. Therefore, in a recent report prepared by the CCC, it has advised government that by 2025 at the latest, no new homes should be connected to the gas grid and all low- carbon energy (such as heat pumps) will replace current gas driven appliances. Panasonic are dedicated to produce a solution for the UK housing problem and support this more environmentally-friendly approach. The Panasonic Aquarea air to water heat pumps offer an innovative solution to the future of heating and cooling and an environmentally-friendly way to make our unfit homes, healthy again. As part of a full switch announced by Panasonic in 2018 the latest Aquarea range of heat pumps use the latest R32 refrigerant for increased savings and better environmental results. R32 is easy to recycle, has zero impact on the ozone layer and 75 per cent less impact on global warming, helping to lower the carbon footprint of residential homes. The Panasonic Aquarea range is known for being a highly efficient solution, utilising the air as a 100 per cent renewable energy source. Now, the J Generation features an improved heating efficiency compared with the previous generation, with a COP of 5,33 on the WH-UD03JE5 model and a Domestic Hot Water (DHW) COP of up to 3,3. From September 2019, models

will be rated A+++ in low temperature operation, which is the highest energy class, according to the new Energy Labelling Directive 2010/30/EC. Furthermore, the Panasonic Aquarea J Generation can reach an output water temperature of 60˚C. There is also a new chiller function which can provide cooling down to 10˚C for those warmer months – the perfect solution for flexible environment control.


Sustainable developments


Sustainability is high on the agenda for current housing developments to lower carbon emissions from homes, with the average eco-home capable of cutting energy bills by 30 per cent. Marina Village Greystones in Ireland features 358 architecturally designed A-rated homes. All homes were installed with the Panasonic Monobloc Aquarea air to water heat pump because of their outstanding A++ energy efficiency rating. This project is more than just environmentally friendly, it’s consistently saving residents up to 50 per cent on their fuel bills, 20 per cent more than the average eco-friendly home is predicted to do.


Panasonic’s Aquarea range of air to water heat pump solutions use only a small amount of electricity to turn surrounding air into hot water to heat our homes and DMH. The new Aquarea J Generation has improved comfort in extreme conditions with temperatures as low as -20˚C.


Building homes still generates five tonnes of CO2 per year, producing as much CO2 as someone living an average lifestyle does over a decade. This creates an even greater demand to make sure our homes function on low carbon and sustainable energy. The average household in the UK emits 2.7 tonnes of CO2 every year from heating alone. Switching to air to water heat pumps to provide heating to our homes, such as the Panasonic Aquarea J Generation with R32 refrigerants, housing emissions can be lowered significantly, plus residents can save up to 50 per cent on their fuel bills. Air to water heat pumps is the future for the housing sector and an essential step in challenging the climate change problem.
