Climate change is the most important global topic of the moment, as human acvity is having a measurable impact on our planets climate systems. There are many humanrelated factors that contribute to climate change and planetary wide damage, from rain forest deforestaon to plasc

accumulaon in the seas, from overfarming methane producing livestock, to the destrucon of bee habitats. The most crical and relevant issue for our industry is the increasing amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which is the primary cause of global warming

A ccording to National

Geographic, along with water vapour and a number of minor gases, there are four major greenhouse gases; methane and nitrous oxide, which are

relevant for the agricultural sectors; carbon dioxide and ‘industrial gases’, both of which are relevant for the HVACR sectors. Carbon dioxide comes primarily from burning fossil fuels, which makes heating a critically important sector in terms of working to reduce the amount being pumped into the atmosphere. ‘Industrial gases’ consist of fluorinated gases such as

hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, chlorofluorocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride and nitrogen trifluoride, which makes any sector using these gases to heat, cool or insulate responsible for driving down the production, use, leakage and disposal of such products.

HVACR Live seeks to explore all of the areas where the UK HVACR sectors and the people working in them can make a real difference, even if it’s simply understanding what needs to happen through the seminars offered in the HVACR Live Conference. Climate Action is the overriding theme of HVACR Live, bringing together voices from all aspects and bringing people in who need to hear the industry’s voice. The Conference is at the heart of the event, providing legislation updates, key area training, contentious topical debate and complex issue analysis. Keeping up to date with what’s happening now and in the future makes this an essential event to attend for anyone involved with HVACR.

SkillFRIDGE

Young people coming into the workforce today understand the importance of climate action in a very real way and the Conference explores how to encourage such valuable knowledge and attitudes into the workforce. Skills set up the workforce for the future, no matter how experienced – but we all have to start somewhere and apprenticeships are the most critically important way to get young blood into the industry.

discussing ‘Sustainability and the Performance Gap’ and the highly topical ‘Hydrogen vs Heat Pump’ debate. Other speakers include Peter Dyment from Camfil who will be educating visitors about Indoor Air Quality and Andrea Voight from EPEE who will be presenting ‘Count on Cooling as an Enabler for Carbon Neutrality’. The third day will be focussing on skills, training and educating of people, from young people accessing the industry through to teaching old engineer’s new tricks. Neil Hitchin from TCUK will be ‘Raising the Bar on ACR Training’, discussing initiatives such as SkillFRIDGE; Graeme Fox will be tackling the contentious issue of mandatory upskilling on flammable refrigerants while Jane Gartshore educates visitors on the Pressure Equipment Directive.

In addition, there are sessions across the three days from well-known organisations in the industry such as the Institute of Refrigeration, the BESA, FETA as well as experts from Daikin, Climalife, Toshiba, Honeywell, Carrier, Bitzer, and Chemours.

Expo

Supporting the Conference and the SkillFRIDGE superheat is the HVACR Live Expo showcasing new suppliers and distributors and giving HVACR professionals from all walks the chance to engage and explore new opportunities. Alongside such established names at the expo as Guntner and Carrier Rental, there are a number of newer and specialist businesses setting up for visitors to explore.

SkillFRIDGE is one of the most important initiatives to support young people coming into the industry, to highlight the possibilities to other young people coming up behind them and to raise the skill level of the entire industry. With a view to demonstrating how talented and enthusiastic these young people are, HVACR Live is hosting a SkillFRIDGE superheat and invites everyone in the industry to come along and support them – they need to see that they’re entering an industry that supports its apprentices.

Conference

HVACR Live will be kicking off on 20 April with an overview of F-Gas, where we are now and what the future will bring and BESA will be updating visitors on post-Grenfell legislation. The highlight of the day will be a panel which includes a representative from BEIS discussing the Brexit landscape as it lies in April and how it affects the HVACR sector.

Climate Action will kick into gear on the following day and include panels of experts

30 BUILDING SERVICES & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER MARCH 2020

The continuing demand for low GWP refrigerant in Europe has prompted Petra Engineering Industries to design, develop and launch a new series of Chilled Water Package Units using propane (R290) as the refrigerant. R290 has a GWP of three, making it a most promising candidate for sustainable refrigeration in the future. By integrating both the chiller with the refrigerant-tight circuit, and an AHU, Petra’s chilled water package unit eliminates the risk of refrigerant ingress into an occupied space. The new R290 Chilled Water Package Unit will be on display at the HVAC Live Exhibition in London in April 2020.

The Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) team will be offering free training sessions. These will be short taster sessions which will focus on topical issues for service engineers and CPDs will be issued to all those attending. The final programme will soon be available on the IOR website and is likely to include a wide range of topics such as the importance of refrigerant recovery, working safely with flammable refrigerants in heat pumps or point of work risk assessments. In addition to scheduled talks the IOR will be hosting daily networking events including the launch of the air conditioning

ensure those opportunities can be maximised. There are open spaces to have those semi-formal chats or chance meetings, private pods to hash out agreements or cement deals and an exclusive formal evening event to meet new people, shake hands and create bonds. All in all, HVACR is the one place to learn, discover and keep on top of the fast-moving changes taking the HVACR industry towards a better future.

Networking is key, because building relationships is crucial in HVACR. To enable the flow of business, spaces are available throughout the event to
