EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Pushing fire safety to the forefront

T

he Building Safety Act, introduced in response to the tragic Grenfell Tower fire disaster, has rightly pushed fire safety in buildings to the forefront. The skyline of many UK cities is clearly evolving with multi-dwelling properties on multiple floors. And while there are many advantages to these

structures, there are some unique challenges as well, particularly in terms of fire safety. Fire Safety & Security is one of the main focuses of this issue and we have a number of features that look at some of the complexities offering an important update for the building services professional. Firstly David Mowatt of the Smoke Control Association looks at the key role of smoke control in life safety systems and calls for proper certification and compliance from installers. (Pg 6) It’s followed by Craig Abbot, of fire protection

specialist FSi Promat who discusses how early engagement will improve fire safety and how to get it right the first time. (Pg 8)

Finally, Lee Parsons of Artic Hayes discusses the complexities and solutions surrounding fire safety in multi-dwelling, multi-floor buildings and how to safeguard their occupants. (Pg 10) Maintenance (Pg 14) and Building Controls (Pg 17), two subjects that are crucial to building comfort and safety are also highlighted this month with views from Maincor, Alfa Laval, Wilo, GWE and Whitecode. • Don’t forget the Building Services Forum, which is

brought to you by BSEE, will be held on June 6 at the Building Centre in London. See Pg 19 for more. Don’t miss you chance to get you tickets from our website https://bseeforum.co.uk/book-tickets/ Heather Ramsden, Editor
