Out with the old and in with the new Goodbye from Neil…
can’t believe I’ve been standing in as editor of BSEE for a whole year now, and what a year it’s been. The technology being developed and installed in modern buildings is truly remarkable and the backup being offered by suppliers and engineers is second to none. It’s all helping to combat the many issues currently being faced by the industry, not least of which is energy use and emissions. Having now met many of the people behind the latest solutions to these problems, I have no doubt that they will overcome them and help the industry to enjoy a more sustainable future for the benefit of all.

So it just remains for me to thank everyone for their support while I’ve been editing BSEE and wish the new editor, Elizabeth Jordan the best of luck in her new role.
Neil Mead, Editorial Director Hello from Elizabeth…
s the year draws to a close, it feels odd to be saying “hello”, but here I am facing a new role and all the adventure and challenge that brings with it. Perhaps an awareness of new starts is a good thing to have, rather than winding down for the last few weeks of 2019.

Usually a time of reflection, it’s key that we as individuals and an industry look at what’s going on

around us in each moment and how that might affect the future. Christmas is a traditional time of plenty and celebration,
something to treasure despite any national instabilities and uncertainties, yet also a time we must not forget our targets for the New Year.
As the BCIA’s Jon Belfield mentions in this month’s industry comment, it can only take one small change for each person to start a major shift in the way we as a society and industry function and shape the impact we have on our environment.
Perhaps one of these small changes could be the
refurbishment or maintenance of systems already in place that could do with an update to improve their efficiency, or more accurate monitoring of systems in use and tracking how energy is spent and could be saved.
