hree leading businesses in the plumbing and renewables industries, Pegler, Sunamp and Flamco, have formed a circular partnership that allows experts in their field to support each other by creating innovative new products and by diversifying the use of existing products in alternative markets and applications. Part of the global Aalberts organisation, Pegler’s award winning VSH Tectite fitting, has been specified by Sunamp, specialist in thermal energy storage, in its heat battery products over the last few years, initially on the Sunamp PV products and now on the company’s UniQ range. Sunamp is co-operating with Flamco, also part of the Aalberts group and manufacturer of components for use in HVAC systems, on its FlexTherm Eco range creating a truly holistic approach to supporting the ever-growing renewables sector.
“The functionality and versatility of our product range and the ability of our organisation to diversify into new markets is perfectly exhibited here and shows the global drive of companies across the Aalberts group to pioneer the latest technologies,” said Iain Morrison, areas manager, Pegler.
“We are proud to have such strong relationships with our customers and partner companies to ensure the renewables and plumbing sectors are supported in their ambitious and necessary growth plans.”
Engineering construction industry levy set to rise to meet demand for training
new strategy to help steer engineering construction companies through a critical time for the industry has been launched by government skills body, the ECITB. The strategy identifies the need to replace an ageing workforce and harness technological change as critical challenges for the engineering construction industry up to 2022 and beyond. Over the three-year life of the strategy, £600bn worth of infrastructure projects across the UK will get underway and are set to complete, creating huge demand for skilled employees and for relevant skills training.
A
The ECITB, which is funded by a levy on industry and supports training courses through a system of funding grants, has spent the past six months consulting with employers and listening to their skills needs
both now and in the future. The new three- year strategy pledges to meet current skills needs, committing 70 per cent of expenditure to support current training and 30 per cent to ensure industry has the skills it needs for tomorrow, pledging to invest in technology and innovation as well as recruiting new entrants.
Lynda Armstrong, chair of the ECITB, said: “The engineering construction industry is at a critical juncture. While profit margins are tight in many sectors we are seeing signs of recovery. But with major new infrastructure projects underway and scheduled for the future, it is crucial industry has the skilled people it needs.
“Unless we prepare for the future by embracing new technology and recruiting new starters to replace our ageing workforce UK Plc will struggle to deliver these projects safely and efficiently.”
CIBSE updates Fire Safety Engineering guidance
W
ith fire safety a top priority for building designers around the world, The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has published a revised and updated version of its widely respected Guide E: Fire
Safety Engineering.
The revised Guide takes account of recent changes in regulation seven of the Building Regulations in England, which prohibit the use of combustible materials in the external walls of buildings over 18m in height containing residential accommodation. The latest edition also incorporates additional content on international best practice, including North America, Australasia and the Gulf region.
Publication of the document follows the second anniversary of the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in West London in which 72 people lost their lives and 70 were injured. The new guide was close to publication prior to the fire, and the steering committee subsequently made further updates and enhancements to reflect regulatory changes since the fire. The guide includes additional guidance on building facades and external wall construction. For further information, or to purchase a copy of the guide visit
