Lighting the way for Aston Martin Red Bull Racing

s part of the Team Supplier agreement between the companies, Zumtobel Group has provided the perfect ambience to showcase the racing cars and graphics in the

versatile and dynamic MK-7 hospitality venue. This is a unique, immersive and vibrant new space within the factory. Zumtobel Group has also created the ideal illumination for other areas of the facility.

Outstanding lighting solution

The two companies, both market leaders, are building a relationship that will benefit both high- tech brands. Zumtobel and acdc are contributing their extensive expertise and experience, in addition to creating an outstanding lighting solution. Both companies are working together to portray the brand image in the correct light, whilst saving energy and creating the best possible environment for staff and visitors alike. Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, Zumtobel and acdc are creating a winning combination with a shared vision of excellence, delivering solutions that are tailored to the success of their objectives. The journey begins at the entrance of MK-7, where acdc’s Novus architectural, low glare downlights provide moody, atmospheric pools of light that give the feeling of anticipation to guests entering the space. Novus and Novus Mini have been installed using highly efficient optics to deliver 2000 lumens and 1100 lumens respectively with an efficacy of 97 lumens per watt in 6000ºK with 80 CRI. The MK-7 reception area has been illuminated with Zumtobel’s SLOTLIGHT Infinity with its consistently linear design and high precision that achieves a completely new dimension of linearity: it is three-dimensional, linear and yet dynamic. The area used to showcase the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing fleet of racing cars required experimentation to light all 14 models from RB1 to RB14 as required.

The original brief was to use mainly blue light, along with red and yellow to highlight the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing livery. After looking at many alternatives, it was decided that this was the perfect solution if additional coloured light was added to the blue in the mixing palette. Concept designer, Shaun Lawry, then experimented using white light to determine product positioning to create the best modelling effects and, by introducing RGB started playing with the colour to establish what worked and what didn’t and discovered that the effect of blue light would kill the colours of red and yellow, but established that with the introduction of red and green light provided the necessary energy to revitalise the livery of each car.

Attention to detail

As the concept was modelled in 3DS MAX software using true photometry and virtual cameras, the Zumtobel and acdc design team

were able to animate and demonstrate the lighting effect and controls. This provided an in- depth knowledge of how the car design livery would react to different coloured light and how blues and yellows could be used to emphasise the colour graphics being used.

Lawry comments: “We have successfully provided a chiaroscuro effect which draws attention purely to the form and shape of the cars, then by adding colour we have added an extra dimension and focus towards the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing livery”.

The final scheme used three acdc luminaires to illuminate each car, two RGB Fusion 48s and one Tuneable White Fusion 48. With the final positioning the design team were able to set the Fusion luminaires to use mainly blue and yellow light that were used to switch on and emphasise the true brand colours of the car’s livery. Fusion is a range of intelligent, highly efficient, IP66 architectural LED floodlights delivering 2000lm and in excess of 8000lm in single colour. The crisp, clean, unobtrusive design enables Fusion to blend seamlessly into architecture to ensure the primary focus of attention is on the luminaires’ lit effect. Fusion offers four channel dimmable colour options: RGB, RGBW, RGBA, Tuneable White and single colour. All of the Fusion luminaires have been supplied in black to blend seamlessly with the surrounding decor.

Blade linear wall wash luminaires with Clean Beam Technology illuminate the graphics that complement the cars, providing a uniform light across the graphics with minimal spill light on the surroundings via the precision optics. Blade incorporates a new colour-mixing chamber comprising of four components within the luminaire, resulting in a purity of colour that is immediate on whatever surface is being lit, producing a pure graze of light. Additionally, its

new micro louvre and diffusing film means that acdc is leading the way in glare control, giving a further level of protection and making it incredibly comfortable to view in any environment.

Reduced costs and installation times

To negate the need to turn on all of the specialist lighting for cleaning and maintenance tasks, high- performance CRAFT high-bay luminaires from Zumtobel have been installed in the ceiling on an 11 pole TECTON trunking system that allows luminaires to be moved, using CLIX-technology, should the layout of the space change. CRAFT is compact, powerful and efficient, high bay luminaire with a luminous flux of 25000 lumens and an impressive luminaire efficacy of 135lm/W. CRAFT also boasts a long lifetime of 50,000 hours, retaining 85 per cent of original performance thanks to lighting cones with square beam patterns. This means that fewer luminaires are required and investment costs are significantly reduced. TECTON trunking bosting up to 40 per cent shorter installation times requires initial installation by a trained electrician but, once in place, fittings can easily be snapped into position via CLIX-technology by means of two side- mounted rotary levers on the TECTON trunking. Zumtobel’s CRAFT high-bay luminaires illuminate the machine shop, utilising a Dali controller to take full advantage of the available daylight harvesting, thus maximising financial and energy savings. acdc’s Ultra Miniature 24V linear LED luminaires have been utilised to illuminate graphic totems situated outside the boardroom and to wash the underside of stairs. acdc’s Ultra provides an even, continuous and powerful light output with excellent colour rendering.
