SHOW PREVIEW: HEALTHCARE ESTATES 2019


This year’s Healthcare Estates conference programme ‘has something for everyone’. With the show hosng the Internaonal Federaon of Hospital Engineering, experts on healthcare estate management, healthcare engineering, and the healthcare architecture and construcon supply chain, from all over the world will speak both at the conference itself, and during a dedicated aernoon session in the new Plenary theatre


BSEE Healthcare Estates 2019


he annual conference will have four streams – Strategy and Leadership, Engineering and Facilities Management, Planning, Design and Construction, and Innovation. The exhibition and conference also have ‘a new look’, with a Plenary Theatre in the exhibition hall, where the keynote presentations will be given at the start of each day. The keynote sessions are free to attend for delegates, exhibitors, ‘VIPs’, speakers, and apprentices. This year’s keynote speakers are:

u8 October – Simon Corben, director and head of Profession, NHS Estates and Facilities, NHS Improvement, and Alasdair Coates, Engineering Council CEO. u9 October – Professor Michail Kagioglou, Dean of the University of Huddersfield, and Alan Sharp, CEO at the Mater Hospital in Dublin. The ‘motivational speaker’ will be Sally Becker, the ‘Angel of Mostar’ (HEJ – May 2019).


Plenary theatre


Following each day’s opening Plenary session, a programme of free content available to all will take place. Day one session will focus on ‘diversity and inclusion’, with speakers from the IHEEM Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, including its chairman, Dr Manju Patel, and presentations from Suzie Mertes from Police Scotland, Claire Hennessy of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Ashley Dunsmore from Kier Construction, and Trish Marchant from Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Kim Shelley from ETA Projects, and Elizabeth Donnelly of the Women’s Engineering Society, will add further impact, while Simon Adamson from South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and James Chadwick from University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, will discuss ‘Engineers of the future’.


uThe Design and Construction Zone – Focusing entirely on design and construction within healthcare, this ‘zone’ will feature the latest project case studies, findings from postoccupancy evaluation, and sharing of best practice in exemplar design and construction. uThe Training, Staffing and Apprentice Zone – The Troup Bywaters +Anders (TB+A) team will discuss their experiences with apprentices, with past apprentices available to give advice and perspectives. ‘Significant changes’ on the horizon within the healthcare sector, including the introduction of new roles and changes to training funding, will be discussed. uThe Energy and Sustainability Zone – In-depth content will be delivered by the Carbon and Energy Fund. The zone will showcase the latest techniques and innovation to reduce the service’s carbon footprint to meet its carbon reduction targets. uThe Facilities Management Zone – will focus on issues that ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ FM teams face day to day. uFire and Security Zone – presenting and promoting ‘the latest solutions to fire safety needs’. Speakers from a wide variety of fire and security companies and associations with first-hand experience tackling fire safety issues within healthcare estates will speak.


Workshop following second day keynotes


Following the second day’s keynotes, NHSI will lead a workshop, centered around ‘Safety, Workforce, and Resilience’, but with the focus dictated in advance by attendees. IHEEM is hosting a survey to establish the topics visitors would most like to see covered.


International flavour


With this year’s Healthcare Estates event hosting the IFHE, the afternoon of 9 October will feature – in a dedicated session in the Plenary theatre – international case studies and content from the US, the Falkland Islands, Germany, and Ireland, covering exemplars in hospital design, energy saving, and facilities management.


Exhibition theatres


Seven exhibition theatres will give visitors plenty of opportunity to catch up on the latest products, regulations, and best practice. The theatres are: uThe HVAC & Engineering Theatre – sponsored by SolXEnergy, and focusing on topics including gas safety, infection control, HVAC, waste management, ‘and many more’. uThe Infection Control and Water Zone – The Water Management Society will run a programme on water management and infection control, featuring products and services designed to increase water safety and reduce infection risk in hospital environments.

The Healthcare Estates IHEEM Awards Dinner takes place on 8 October at The Principal Manchester, a magnificent terracotta Grade II listed building dating back to 1890.


This year’s after-dinner speaker, Peter McDonald, has been a consultant general surgeon at Northwick Park and St. Mark’s since 1991. As a bowel surgeon, he has a well-developed sense of humour that gives his audience a glimpse into both the lighter, and occasionally the more serious, side of his surgical work.
