DOMESTIC HEATING SOLUTIONS – RADIATORS
Radiators – fit for the future in a renewables world…
Radiators are still making a substantial and everyday contribution to heating systems across the UK and Ireland with more than 90% of heating systems installed featuring radiators of one design or another. With many new introductions to its ranges, radiator manufacturer Stelrad has now also included its first ever electric radiator series as well as ‘green steel’ allowing purchasers to make a contribution to the race for Net Zero carbon from domestic heating in the UK
T
he development of lower temperature heating systems, utilising renewable heating appliances such as air source heat pumps – initially raised some questions about whether radiators
could provide the levels of heating and hot water required in the home. That is no longer a serious question with radiators proving their ability to work equally as well with lower temperature renewable heating systems as with traditional boiler driven systems. It’s important that radiators are sized properly to meet the needs of each room in the home – but sizing radiators has always been key and manufacturers such as Stelrad offer free radiator sizing and heat loss calculations. You can achieve the extra boost radiators need by replacing the existing single or double panel radiators with K3 radiators that have three panels and three sets of fins – providing the additional metal surfaces you need but without increasing the radiator footprint on the wall. These combined with additional levels of insulation will work well. Radiators are very much ‘fit for the future’ but as always, correct sizing will need to be undertaken to ensure that they keep the home warm and cosy. They work well with air source heat pumps and they already are in a host of installations across the UK.
Stelrad’s Electric Series includes a dozen or so
different models with a number of sizes of each model available, with standard radiators for any room along with a selection of towel rails specifically targeted at bathrooms and en-suites. As well as offering effective, functional heating in the home, the Electric Series is described as aesthetically appealing and provides attractive options for the décor in the home. They come with a five-year warranty on the heating parts and a two-year warranty on the electric components.
Low carbon-emissions steel radiators are
receiving an excellent response as a new approach to the reduction of carbon emissions in the production of steel radiators. A Green Compact radiator range contributes directly to a reduction in atmospheric CO2
and accelerates decarbonisation in the future. The range comes with an Environmental
Product Declaration (EPD). An EPD transparently
emissions today
reports objective, comparable and third-party verified data about products’ environmental performance over the lifecycle of the radiator. This guarantees a thorough and verifiable declaration in line with the ISO 14025 standard for environmental labels and declarations. The steel utilised in the manufacture of these Green Compact radiators is XCarb recycled and renewably produced steel from ArcelorMittal, which is made in an electric arc furnace with high recycled content and 100% renewable electricity. Using this low-emissions steel results in a 66% reduction in CO2
per tonne of steel, compared with using the same product made via the conventional steelmaking process. One of the latest trends in the radiator world is the hugely increasing demand for coloured radiators – no longer is it that you can have a radiator in ‘any colour so long as it’s white’! Now radiators are available in up to 55 different RAL

colours and the previous turnaround time for the delivery of coloured radiators has reduced massively from around eight weeks to just 14 days. Initially this new rapid turnaround service applied to popular Column and Concord ranges, and to the Classic Towel Rail, Caliente and Concord towel rail products. Now the same rapid turnaround for coloured radiators is available. Stelrad has introduced a FREE 48-hour Quick Delivery for its premium panel products and its column radiators. This service sits alongside Stelrad’s standard 5-day lead time, offering customers a reliable solution for those last minute or time critical requirements. “We launched this new service for ‘urgently
required only’ radiators,” says Stelrad’s marketing director Chris Harvey. “So, we are launching this new service from 1st March 2026 to all UK customers for premium panel and column radiators.”
