BRIDGING THE GAP
The HVAC sector, like many others, faces one of its most pressing challenges: a widening skills gap. With the growing demand for energy-efficient HVAC solutions, the need for highly trained technicians has never been greater.

Carrier’s focus on training
ecognising this urgency, Carrier launched a state-of-the-art training facility in Bracknell last year. In February this year, the company announced it was expanding its apprenticeship
programme to create more opportunities for young people.
Carrier’s initiatives focus on hands-on learning,
real-world applications and leadership development, ensuring apprentices and current technicians acquire the skills, confidence and expertise they need in an evolving industry.
The power of practical learning Carrier’s Academy provides new and existing technicians with direct access to a full range of Carrier commercial heat pumps, chillers and air handling units.
Technicians can develop their skills in: √ Commissioning and servicing new installations
Safe handling of low-carbon refrigerants, such as R-290
Preventative maintenance, VFDs and compressor overhauls
Diagnosing faults and troubleshooting real-world scenarios
This practical approach ensures that trainees and technicians are fully prepared to support the needs of their customers, with real problem-solving skills that serve them throughout their careers. Archie Hanlon, a third-year Refrigeration and Air Conditioning apprentice at Carrier, has gained expertise in maintaining, servicing and commissioning Carrier systems. He enjoys the variety of working on different job sites and has
Developing leaders for the future While technical expertise is vital, Carrier’s programme also focuses on digital literacy, leadership and workplace resilience, skills that are often overlooked in traditional training. Apprentices work closely with experienced mentors who guide them through their early careers, helping them build confidence and develop a long-term career path. Carrier’s investment in soft skills training is a game-changer, ensuring that apprentices not only master HVAC technology but also grow into future industry leaders. Starting his Carrier apprenticeship in 2005, James McEwan has worked his way up from Service Technician to Regional Service Manager. His apprenticeship gave him the ‘ground-up’ knowledge to lead effectively, as he understands the challenges technicians face daily. “Looking back, the best thing about my
apprenticeship was the fact it’s led me to this point in my career,” said James. “If I’d not started, then I wouldn’t be part of an organisation that invests in its people and helps solve problems for its customers.” Keira Davies is a second-year Carrier
apprentice studying Electrical Installation and Maintenance. She initially struggled with feeling out of place in a male-dominated industry. However, Carrier’s inclusive environment
developed problem-solving skills in diagnosing faults on complex systems. “I really enjoy the hands-on learning opportunities I get during site visits,” said Archie. “These experiences give me a better understanding of the challenges technicians face and help me to give technical support with a more practical perspective.”
and supportive team helped her grow in confidence. Now, she’s responsible for maintaining Carrier’s fleet of hot water and steam boilers, ensuring they meet the highest safety standards. She hopes to inspire more young women to pursue apprenticeships in engineering.
A blueprint for success With a 30% increase in apprentice intake and a structured approach to training and leadership development, Carrier is aiming to attract and nurture new talent this year. The combination of hands-on experience, technical expertise and soft skills training headlined by clear progression into full time employment can help bridge the skills gap and support the UK’s transition to low- carbon heating and cooling solutions.
