accurate measurement of power parameters. The measurement equipment must offer high common-mode noise rejection, as the output voltages of the inverters display high dV/dt, giving rise to spectral components at very high frequencies.

MEASUREMENT SOLUTIUON KEB has procured the WT5000, the latest model in Yokogawa’s family of Precision Power Analysers, for use in the development and validation of frequency converters and other products. KEB is a long-time user of Yokogawa power analyser products. It performed rigorous comparisons of the WT5000 with earlier power analysers: its analysis showed that the average currents attributable to common- mode noise were at an extremely low level, and lower than in its previous test instrument, the Yokogawa WT1800. In addition, KEB’s tests of the WT5000 found no crosstalk from channels affected by common-mode noise to other channels, even when operating at the system’s full measurement bandwidth of 5 MHz for current and 10 MHz for voltage.

THE RESULT

converters requires detailed analysis of the circuit’s voltage and current waveforms and instantaneous values. This enables the developers to measure power losses accurately, and so to refine the circuit to improve overall efficiency. This calls for test instrumentation which rejects the high levels of common-mode noise generated by the IGBT power switches in KEB’s frequency converters.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS KEB uses a power analyser throughout the development phase of a new frequency converter design. After completion of a final production design, the power analyser is also used to validate the product’s performance specifications, and to verify the characteristics of production units.

As the world’s most accurate precision power analyser, the WT5000 offers the performance required by KEB’s development team. KEB uses the WT5000 to measure power losses in frequency converters and to validate their operation. The WT5000’s power measurements are accurate to 0.01 per cent (reading) and 0.02 per cent (range) at AC mains frequency (50/60 Hz). The instrument is able to handle KEB’s demanding test requirements, whether for high-frequency operation – the WT5000 has measurement bandwidth of 5 MHz and maintains 18-bit resolution at a sampling rate up to 10 MS/s – or for complex test set-ups. The instrument has a modular architecture, in which the user can simultaneously measure and view seven swappable input elements, which slot into the rear of the frame. The flexibility to reconfigure the test set-up is particularly valuable to KEB’s development teams, which continually switch from one project to another in support of KEB’s broad portfolio of products. KEB’s David Kater says: “I really like the modular design of the channels on the WT5000. KEB has used the seventh channel, for example, to measure auxiliary power supplies or the DC link while the first six are measuring the main motor or converter circuits. The WT5000 also helps make engineers more productive with features such as immediate recognition of the module configuration after switching on, followed by automatic initialisation of the channels.” KEB’s engineers also favour the instrument’s intuitive navigation and touchscreen operation, which reduce the time it takes to configure and run a test.

WT5000 PRECISION POWER METER Featuring high isolation and high noise immunity, accurate current sensing and precise filtering in a modular architecture, the WT5000 is an extensible measurement platform which performs precision power analysis to aid the development of energy- efficient systems.

Key benefits of the WT5000 include:

Reliability – with a guaranteed accuracy of ±0.03 per cent, harmonic comparisons up to the 500th order, and custom computations, the WT5000 produces multi-channel measurements which the user can trust.

Versatility – featuring seven slots for user- swappable input elements, diverse mainframe options, and simultaneous evaluation of up to four motors, the WT5000 enables the user to expand or reconfigure the instrument as applications and needs change. Raw data can also be streamed to a PC for detailed analysis.

Flexibility – the WT5000 provides a full touchscreen experience, supported by hardware hotkeys and powerful software for remote measurements, so connecting, configuring and measuring power has never been easier.

“The WT5000’s extremely high immunity to common-mode noise and the high channel- to-channel isolation indicate to me that I can safely rely on the instrument when analysing the voltages and currents which are switched by semiconductor power components,” concludes Kater.
