FEATURE FORKLIFT TRUCKS
ACAS: PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF FORKLIFT SAFETY
a new system would need to be designed, developed and tested we knew this would be a tall order. Transmon worked hard to give us the ideal solution, the system designed compliments the Doosan product perfectly and works extremely well, and is very impressive. The expertise in this area that Transmon has shown cemented them in my mind that they are the right team for developing such a product. It has strengthened our relationship further and the ACAS system has now become a standard for all new Doosan trucks going to the customers’ site.” After multiple tests and trials the
Forklift safety is of paramount importance to most, if not all sites operating materials handling equipment. You only need to take a look at the accident figures to realise just how dangerous materials handling equipment can be

ites are taking additional measures to increase forklift safety for both
operators and also workers who conduct their roles in close proximity to the trucks, none more so than that of Ibstock Brick (part of the Forticrete Group.) During their most recent contract renewals the group decided to see what is available in the market place, both for new forklift trucks suitable for the arduous conditions they operate in and new and innovative safety systems. Transmon Engineering Ltd, in
partnership with Glosrose Engineering a leading partner of Doosan Industrial Vehicle UK were invited in to discuss requirements with the site and to better understand what was currently in place and more importantly, what the end goal is. After multiple discussions to better
understand the operation and materials handling usage on site, the goal became clear: “Whilst the truck is in reverse a system needs to be able to not only slow the truck down upon detection of an obstacle / pedestrian but to also apply a braking force to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop if needed” A clear improvement on the existing systems in place.
22 After initial testing on the Doosan
D30S-7 machines it became apparent that in order to reach the end goal a whole new system would need to be designed. Transmon set to work to design, build and test just such a system. Aptly named ACAS (Active Collision Avoidance System) due to its ability to respond to potential collisions. The system utilises a combination of ultrasound sensors to detect objects across multiple ranges, these ranges can be customised to suit each individual truck and its application. These sensors are the coupled with our in-house designed ACAS system to apply a braking force to the truck when an object is detected too close to the rear of the truck, this braking force brings the truck to a controlled stop whilst still allowing the driver full control of the vehicle. Russ Butcher, managing director from
Glosrose Engineering had this to say: “We were already aware of Transmon
and their extensive work with Doosan, so they were the natural choice for such a complex safety solution. We were tasked with a full safety specification by the client and all areas needed to be covered in order to have the Doosan trucks on-site. Upon the realisation that

system was signed off and Transmon set to work installing this complex system to the fleet of new trucks destined for site. The system coupled with a whole host
of other features to adhere to stringent site safety specifications such as Transmon’s own designed sequential seatbelt start system ensures that the operators of the forklift trucks, the pedestrians working on site and also the stock is kept as safe as is possible. Rob Lloyd from Ibstock had this to say
about the system and trucks: “In my eyes, the Doosan truck is for us, it’s for this type of industry. The safety systems in place have really enhanced our site safety, especially the ACAS system, once you get to half a metre, the truck will come to a stop. In my eyes, it’s the best truck that is out there.” Transmon are exhibiting at IMHX, you
