DHL BREAKS GROUND AT SPECIALIST WAREHOUSE IN SNELSHALL D

HL Supply Chain has broken ground on its new 20,000 sq. m warehouse at Snelshall,

Milton Keynes. Representatives of DHL Supply Chain’s UKI board looked on as CEO José Nava formally commenced work on the new multi- user facility, which once complete will support a number of specialist contracts including the end-to-end supply chain management of uniforms for a number of UK police forces. As part of DHL’s commitment to reduce all

logistics-related emissions to net-zero by 2050, the new warehouse will feature several energy- saving innovations that far exceed current regulations for a building of this type. High levels of natural daylight will be provided to reduce the need for artificial lighting while the LED lighting system

will be zoned and controlled via absence sensors. Solar panels will be fitted to the roof and a heat

transfer system will provide warm water to amenity areas. Rainwater will be harvested and used in toilets and external watering points, reducing mains-water usage and stress on the storm-water management system. Electric charging points will also be installed in staff car parks. Speaking at the ceremony, José Nava said:

“We’re delighted to have begun work on our new warehouse which will provide our customers with state-of-the-art facilities for their end-to-end supply chain needs. We’re committed to providing market-leading solutions for our customers while minimising our impact on the environment. The Snelshall site will be industry-

leading in many respects.” The DHL site at Snelshall is due to be completed by Autumn 2020.

FTA to help businesses tackle labour shortage with new event T

hirty-six per cent of logistics companies anticipate long delays recruiting HGV

drivers in the next 12 months, according to a 2019 survey by FTA, as the labour shortage across the sector reaches crisis point. To equip companies with the practical knowledge and tools they need to recruit and retain staff, FTA has launched a brand new one-day event, The Labour Shortages Conference, sponsored by Manpower. Taking place at the Macdonald Burlington

Hotel in Birmingham on Tuesday 29 October 2019, a variety of expert speakers will provide the audience with practical advice and tips on how to implement effective recruitment and retention strategies. Combining interactive workshops, case studies and informative speaker sessions, attendees will learn how to engage effectively with local communities, produce relevant recruitment campaigns, implement training programmes and build impactful social media strategies. Sally Gilson, head of skills campaigns at FTA,

the only business organisation representing all of the logistics sector, commented: “The nationwide shortage of skilled staff presents a serious challenge to logistics businesses; significant shortfalls of HGV drivers, warehouse staff, fitters, technicians and mechanics are all anticipated to continue in the next 12 months, which could be exacerbated by the loss of EU nationals from the UK after Brexit. Between an ageing workforce, competition for skilled staff and shifting migration patterns, the sector is facing serious obstacles in the recruitment and retention of staff; FTA’s Labour Shortages Conference will arm companies with the practical knowledge and tools they need to face these challenges head on.” Jason Greaves, operations director at

ManpowerGroup says: “We’re very pleased to support this event that addresses such a critical issue at such an important time. As one of the largest and most established employment companies in the sector we’ve first-hand experience over many years of what the talent

shortage means to the industry and in helping clients overcome this. I look forward to sharing some of the steps we have taken such as through our newly launched Driver Academy and also our schools outreach programmes – initiatives that help promote the sector to the next generation and provide a source of qualified drivers. But I am also really looking forward to learning how others are addressing these challenges. For more information, or to book your place, please visit www.fta.co.uk/lsc19

on site resulting in the company’s wish to remain with us for at least another ten years.” Paxton Carroll, operations director from

Clipper Logistics, added: “As well as building a great working relationship with Potter Space, the fact we have renewed the lease for a further ten years is not only because of Selby’s strategic location but because Potter Space is able to offer the space and flexibility to enable us to expand our operations further if required.”
