In conversation with... Anderson Silva, Applications Engineer, Murrelektronik

1. How does Murrelektronik’s approach to decentralised power distribution improve overall system efficiency and reduce installation complexity? Can you provide an example of how moving power distribution into the field has impacted cabinet design or system layout?

The power distribution system is like the heart of any equipment. It doesn’t matter if you have the best devices or a cutting-edge solution, if the power supply hasn’t been properly planned, everything can fall apart. A well-designed and properly distributed power solution is vital for the effective operation of any system. We specialise in helping our clients develop the

most suitable topology for each application. It’s not a matter of one being better or worse, it all depends on the specific application and the objectives to be achieved. One concept that many customers find

beneficial is the use of decentralised power solutions. By using an IP67 rated power supply or

an IP67 smart current monitor close to the devices, benefits such as cable reduction, space savings inside the control panel, fewer connections and improved protection quality of the components involved can be achieved. All of this provides advantages not only for the

machine builder but also for the end user. This type of solution reduces infrastructure requirements and simplifies diagnostics collection, making it easier to identify potential faults.

2. What are the key advantages of using the MICO intelligent circuit monitoring system over traditional circuit breakers in 24V DC installations? How does MICO enhance fault detection and troubleshooting in practice?

The power supply systems with many components require reliable load protection. Switch mode power supplies are the core of these systems since electronically monitor output voltage and output current. If there is a short circuit or an overload, protective devices common (for example Circuit breakers) react slower than the power supply and

do not ensure the adequate protection. This can cause critical situations like voltage drops or even cables fires. Others feature, such as auxiliaries contact and type of curves the loads generates need to be considered for a reliable configuration. Our compact MICO modules help eliminate

these problems, it is the intelligent power distributor that monitors currents, indicates when approaching the maximum load and makes targeted shut downs during over-stress or short circuits (regardless of the type of load). It also provides flexibility because each channel is adjustable and can be individually switched off by pressing a button, up to 20A. Using the MICO you also can reduce space inside the cabinet; it is a small and scalable component that is possible to use multiple modules connected via the bridging system. And there another additional benefits such as cascading start of individual current paths, group alarm contact (potential-free) and adjustable current ranges.

3. What ways do Murrelektronik’s plug-and-play cabling solutions help reduce wiring errors and installation time in industrial environments? How does the use of coded connectors and varied cable materials contribute to reliability in different industrial settings?

We are globally recognised for offering a wide range of cable and connector solutions in the world of industrial automation. In addition, we are fully equipped to provide our customers with all the necessary support when specifying each component according to their specific applications. As our vision is focused on delivering

high-connectivity solutions, we always focus on plug-and-play systems that reduce effort, whether during the assembly of a new machine or in the maintenance of equipment in the field, ultimately leading to increased productivity. For example, using coded connectors such as A-coded or D- coded variants significantly boosts productivity during machine setup and maintenance. By preventing mismatched connections and simplifying cable identification, technicians can complete installations faster and with fewer errors, reducing downtime and ensuring quicker commissioning of equipment in industrial environments. Why continue using many terminals and

connections, wasting time on complex assemblies, when plug-and-play solutions can significantly streamline the process? Our commitment is to help customers identify these bottlenecks and, as a result, achieve greater productivity.
