or March’s issue, I wanted to delve deeper into the training that is currently available to engineers as we evolve to adhere to the world’s Net Zero ambitions. To do this, I spoke with Chris Fisher, Senior Technical Programme (Product) Manager at Segen, about their new training centre designed to train the next generation of electrical engineers. Chris began by telling us a bit about himself and what he does with Segen.

“I’ve been with Segen for almost a year and a half now, and I’ve been in renewables for eight years. The accent is from Canda, if you are trying to place it. I used to be an installer of solar panels, working on roofs and installing and maintaining systems—everything from small residential to large commercial projects. I then moved to the UK where I got into the manufacturing space,

working for manufacturers of inverters, batteries and other equipment. Now, I am with Segen, focussing on distribution.
“Segen is the largest renewable energy distributor in the UK, and we’ve been around for 20 years. Founded in 2004, we celebrated our 20th
anniversary last year, which was a fantastic milestone.
“Having been in the industry longer than any other distributor, we have built strong relationships with all the key players. We’re deeply embedded within the renewables industry, and have witnessed both its highs and lows. I can proudly say one of our highs right now is the opening of our training academy. We are really excited to have launched it at the back end of last year (2024), with courses officially going live in January.”
Casey: What has the reception been like to the training academy so far? “The initial reception has been incredibly positive. We began working on this project in the summer of 2023, and one of the reasons our training academy is now considered one of the best in the country is because we actively take feedback from installers. Our core customer base—solar PV installers—provided valuable insights from day one, helping us design and curate the best experience for anybody taking these courses. That early engagement, along with ongoing feedback throughout the whole design process, was absolutely critical to our success. “The feedback we received following the opening of the academy has been equally as positive. The academy itself spans 250 square metres, divided into two different sections: a classroom area and a
