Training for a greener future By Alex Robinson, Head of Product Development, NICEIC

N

ICEIC is one of the UK’s leading providers of electrotechnical training courses and qualifications, with 1,313 training courses delivered to almost 7,400 delegates in 2024. Alex Robinson, Head of Product Development, discusses the importance of training for professionals looking to adapt to evolving customer needs and meet demand in some of the industry’s fastest growing areas. The electrical industry is seeing a monumental

shift driven by the government’s ambitious Capital Net Zero targets and increased demand for sustainable solutions. Central to the Net Zero transition, is the work of electricians who face a changing landscape where renewable technologies are quickly becoming the norm.

The rise of renewable technologies

As the UK Government continues to invest in renewable energy infrastructure, there is also an increase in the number of homeowners and businesses that are moving towards sustainable solutions to reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs.

This will necessitate electricians modifying their skillsets to be able to complete installations. An electrician’s core skillset will always be fundamental, but it will need to be complemented by an understanding of new technologies. As

consumer choices evolve, electricians in the highest demand will be those who can confidently install electric vehicle charging points (EVCPs), solar photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage systems. New research commissioned by NICEIC has highlighted challenges across the electrotechnical industry surrounding technical skills, recruitment and those starting a career in the industry. The research found that one in four businesses surveyed (25 per cent) identified green energy and emerging technologies as their top training priority over the next year. This points to a growing awareness that completing additional training will be vital to businesses look to embrace new growth opportunities.

Training and certification NICEIC is a recognised Electrician Plus training provider. Launched by The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP), Electrician Plus underscores the importance of qualified electricians for installing low-carbon and renewable technologies. Its model emphasises that after becoming a qualified electrician, electricians can build on their core competencies with additional continuing professional development (CPD) training and qualifications in specific new technologies to perform safe and compliant installations. By embracing CPD opportunities and learning new skills, electricians are not only investing in their

own long-term employability but also playing a key role in the UK’s transition to a sustainable future. Relevant training courses offer valuable CPD hours through recognised industry qualifications, guaranteeing electricians remain up to date with the latest regulations, trends and safety standards to futureproof their skillset. Businesses also see direct benefits from the training that their workforce undertakes, helping to expand the portfolio of services you can offer to customers and keeping up to date in an ever-changing industry.

Green skills for the future Given the growing awareness amongst NICEIC certified businesses of the need to upskill in key growth areas such as solar PV, EV charging and electrical energy storage systems (EESS), NICEIC has introduced a wide range of courses and qualifications designed to get electrical contractors skilled and confident in tackling all kinds of energy- efficient installations. It is essential for the industry to collaborate and support electricians and businesses that embrace continuous learning and upskilling. By providing accessible training courses and industry-leading certifications, we can continue empowering trade professionals to be successful in this changing industry and contribute to a greener future.
