FEATURE SHOW PREVIEW

SOUTHERN MANUFACTURING & ELECTRONICS 2019 T

housands of engineering solutions await visitors to Southern

Manufacturing & Electronics, when it returns to Farnborough International from February 5th to 7th 2019. The UK’s largest annual engineering exhibition will welcome around 800 exhibiting companies from across the UK, continental Europe and beyond - an increase of approximately 20 per cent on 2018. Now entering its third decade, the

diversity of firms participating gives Southern Manufacturing & Electronics tremendous appeal across a broad range of engineering activity. Gathered in the stylish, modern

environment of the recently opened 20,000m² Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre will be a remarkable offering of suppliers, ranging from component distributors to major machinery manufacturers. Complementing the products and hardware on show is a diverse selection of subcontract businesses specialising in everything from fabrication to electronics assembly.

WORLDWIDE WARES The show also features a substantial number of non-UK vendors, the numbers of which have increased around 26 per cent over 2018, giving visitors the rare chance to see products and services not normally encountered at a domestic exhibition.

COMPLETE COMPONENTS As a marketplace for components and consumables, Southern Manufacturing & Electronics reigns supreme, with literally hundreds of suppliers offering pretty much every imaginable component, from simple connectors up to custom-built enclosures and racks. Some notable exhibitors for 2019 include CamdenBoss, which recently merged with Smartboxx to create an extremely strong profile within the e- mech and enclosure industries. The firm now offers an extremely comprehensive enclosure range, from potting boxes to POS kiosks. On show will be off the shelf options customised to individual requirements, together with the full design, development and manufacture tool-free ‘Smartboxx’ process. Also on show will be a range of UL listed terminal blocks, IP rated circular connectors and switches. Considered

India’s leading producer of electrical and electronic interconnect products, Terminal Technologies will be exhibiting a wide range of terminals, connectors, insert moulded technology products, fuse boxes and precision stampings. In addition to standard interconnect products, it specialises in bespoke connector design and manufacture. Highlighted this year will be a new range of fuse box connectors and a range of wire-to-wire and PCB interconnect products from JAM Japan.

INTRODUCING INDUSTRY 4.0 Hammond Manufacturing will highlight enclosures optimised for use in IoT and Industry 4.0 applications and returning to Southern Manufacturing and Electronics, Hitaltech will showcase some of the latest components designed for building automation and industrial control applications. They include high power terminal blocks to meet the demands of high power

interface and energy metering applications, miniature terminal blocks, board-to-board connectors, modular jacks and USB style connectors for building management data and communications applications. The Conex-It range of screw and screwless terminal blocks will also be on display. These enable manufacturers to benefit from reliable connections, fast and accurate wiring and/or increased vibration resistance.

AUTONOMOUS ADVANCES Cabling and associated components are also well represented at Southern. Helukabel will display a small sample of its vast catalogue of 33,000 cables, wires and cable accessories, which it supplies to a wide range of market segments including power, automation, control, servo, robotics, data network and bus (DNB) wind turbine and solar applications. Another leading supplier is Habia Cable; the firm provides specialist cables for the most demanding applications, including submarine, extreme heat and corrosive environments and high bending cycle repetitions.

SUBCONTRACTING SUPERSTARS Subcontract services are also a key area of the show. Once again, the choice is extremely wide. Some well-known names include K Lacey Cables, the West Sussex-based, AS9100-approved cable supplier. The firm offers a full-service solution, managing the entire process from component supply, through to inventory management, assembly and delivery. Significant recent investment has been made in equipment such as the Schleuniger MS94B0M cut and strip machine and Cayman software. Industrial Electrical Wiring’s (IEW) services include manufacture of cable assemblies, looms, PCB assemblies, panel and box build, cabinet build and electromechanical assemblies. Production is in a modern Lean environment, supporting prototype, batch or Kanban requirements. Facilities include full automatic testing equipment and ISO 9001:2015 accreditation. Higher level box builds and power boxes will be highlighted this year, together with a new focus on PLC controllers, as a result of developing relationships with software developers in the PLC industry to provide PLC hardware and integration.
