The power of having that conversation that matters
At Rising Vibe our mission statement is to support and challenge leadership to have the conversations that matter to enable a high-performance culture.
There are 4 key areas, that in our experience, are avoided when it comes to these important conversations:
1. Performance management and holding people to account 2. Giving feedback around behaviour and impact 3. Emotional wellbeing and mental health 4. Equality, diversity and inclusion
Conversation number 4 became part of our learning and development and cultural development solutions just 3 years ago, shortly after the murder of George Floyd. For the first time in my career, I recognised that THIS was the conversation I didn’t know how to have, or should I say how to start.
The Rising Vibrational Scale is the back bone model of our brand, using how we feel about any given subject or context to dig deep into why we might be feeling lower vibe, and therefore experiencing some level of resistance. The Scale helps us to recognise what we are telling ourselves in a low vibe moment that means we avoid taking action.
I checked in on the Scale and recognised very low vibe emotions associated with addressing the subject of racism; fear, shame, guilt, regret and insecurity to name but a few. My biggest fear was getting it wrong and making a mistake, but how could I learn and educate myself if I didn’t take action, start this conversation, ask the questions and be OK ‘not knowing’? The answer is I couldn’t. So, Rising Vibe bit the bullet and delivered our first Conversations That Matter event in Sept 2021 addressing race in the workplace.
I was joined by a host of ‘experts’ who were open to my vulnerability and prepared to support me to have these conversations unfiltered, so that I could learn from making a mistake. This was the only way I was able to move from ‘not being racist’ to being ‘anti-racist’.
To start with I didn’t really know the difference, and only by having the conversation was I able to learn what the difference was. And the only way this happened was by me taking a chance and hoping that these ‘experts’ would embrace me and my lack of education in this area. Which they did.
Unfortunately, we don’t know if it’s safe to take the action, until we actually take the action. There is no easy answer. There is no learning that will make a difference until we do something with it, and more often than not this starts with a conversation – with others, and always with ourselves.
