Feature 3 | SINGAPORE AND SOUTHEAST ASIA Keppel reports a steady year

Despite tough competition in the market, Keppel’s business has remained at a fairly constant level over the course of 2017

S

ingapore’s Keppel Shipyard has experienced a relatively steady year for repair and conversion work.

According to a spokesperson: “Our volume of repair work is comparable to last year. We are however seeing more enquiries in the gas sector, particularly with regards to FLNG conversion work, aſter our successful delivery of Hilli Episeyo to Golar in 2017.” More recently Keppel has been entrusted

with the conversion of a LNG carrier to a Floating Storage and Re-gasification Unit (FSRU) by a leading global operator of oil and gas production vessels. Due for completion by the end of the year, Keppel is carrying out a range of repair and life extension work and shipyard engineering, as

well as the installation and integration of the regasification module and upgrades to the cargo handling system. FPSO conversion and repair work also

remains a key element of the yard’s business and this April the company completed work on BW Adolfo, which required various upgrades and modifications to meet the requirements of the Dussafu field, offshore of Gabon. In addition, Keppel is due to deliver FPSO La Noumbi to Perenco before the end of the year and is currently working on the conversion of FPSO Liza Destiny for SBM and Exxon as well as FPSO Ngujima- Yin for Woodside. Environmental refit work is another market segment viewed as having very

positive prospects by the yard. To date Keppel has signed 9 MOUs with ballast water treatment system equipment providers and has completed more than 20 ballast water treatment retrofit projects. Te yard notes that it has developed its 3D scanning capabilities still further, so that it is able to undertake ballast water and scrubber retrofitting projects more efficiently. Te spokesperson adds: “We are especially

now seeing more enquiries for scrubber retrofits, which we anticipate will increase as the IMO regulation of 0.5% sulphur emission cap for marine fuel takes effect in 2020. We undertook Singapore’s first VLCC scrubber retrofit this year and we have more projects in the pipeline.” SR

RINA - Lloyd’s Register Maritime Safety Award

The safety of the seafarer and protection of the maritime environment begins with good design, followed by sound construction and efficient operation. Naval architects and engineers involved in the design, construction and operation of maritime vessels and structures can make a significant contribution to safety and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, with the support of Lloyd’s Register, wishes to recognise the achievement of engineers in improving safety at sea and the protection of the maritime environment.
