Pumps Pump monitoring system

Tankguard Flexline has been formulated to allow vessels to carry aggressive cargoes in coated tanks

SMM show, Tankguard Flexline features Jotun’s Solvoxirane chemistry. Standard tank coatings typically absorb low molecu-

lar weight, aggressive cargoes, leading to swelling that stresses the structural network of the coating film. However, the composition of the Solvoxirane chemis- try is claimed to provide greater coating flexibility, minimising structural stress over repeated absorption/ desorption cycles. Faster desorption times also lead to decreased ventilation requirements, quicker turnaround and enhanced vessel earnings, Jotun claims. Jotun developed the new product aſter an approach

from long-standing customer Stena Bulk, which was looking to shorten vessel turnaround times and enhance cargo flexibility for its IMOIIMAX chemical tanker fleet. Extensive trialling of the product with Stena Bulk is said to have produced positive results, allowing the operator to carry an extensive range of products and chemicals, including methanol, while enhancing operational efficiency. In another initiative, Jotun has co-operated with

Seagull Maritime to develop a set of e-learning modules on the theme of onboard paint maintenance, with emphasis on in-service treatments. Te company points out that while major treatments usually take place in a repair yard and form part of the drydock budget, in-service maintenance is essential to limit ongoing potential deterioration that can have a real impact on long-term costs. In addition to extending the life of a ship, a well-maintained vessel creates a better impression with owners, charterers and inspectors. Te aim of the new e-learning modules is to assist

managers and crew members to improve onboard paint maintenance. Te series focuses on six areas: Inspection, planning

and stock-keeping; Health and safety; Surface prepara- tion; Paint preparation and application; Corrosion; and Paint technology and the coating lifecycle. www.jotun.com

upgrade Corroserve has upgraded its Termodynamic Pump Monitoring (TPM) system so that it can now monitor the performance of any class C pump over its working life. Te modified system offers significant cost saving opportunities to the user, the company claims, with the financial investment in TPM testing being quickly recouped in savings made by reduced energy costs from running a more efficient pump. Calibrated and certified by the Yamari Standard

Laboratory in accordance with relevant Japanese standards, the updated TPM system calculates pump efficiency by the thermodynamic method, based on the first law of thermodynamics. Te effect is that energy losses in the pumping process are transferred to the pumped liquid in the form of heat energy, causing a rise in temperature. Te TPM unit measures temperature and pressure at the pump suction and discharge and by inputting the motor power consumption, the system calculates the flow rate and actual pump performance and efficiency. TPM identifies pump wear and measures changes in

performance and efficiency, allowing the customer to make informed decisions about refurbishment and the optimum time for any work to be carried out. It also identifies the most efficient pumping conditions, provid- ing customers with a detailed report. www.corroserve.com

Pumps Robust UHP pump

launched UK-based Hughes Pumps has introduced the HP170 pump, which is rated at 30lpm at 3000bar. Te new high pressure water jetting unit is considered well suited to the needs of the shiprepair market, including coatings removal work. Te HP170 incorporates a number of new features

that are designed to deliver improved levels of perfor- mance and reliability in a wide range of cleaning and surface preparation applications. Te pump is claimed to be extremely robust and easy to maintain, and can be mounted horizontally or vertically. In another development, Singapore-based Sea

and Land Technologies (SALT) has recently been appointed as the exclusive partner for Hughes’ high pressure water jetting pumps and equipment in ASEAN countries. SALT is a regional market leader in this particular sector. www.hughes-pumps.co.uk
